Is this on par to happen this early down to those levels in Otago? I am just wondering if theres an advection set up getting underway.

It certainly is a hard one to predict, Dunedin has been forecast some snow/sleet to low levels tonight since the outset but I think the coldest air will still be tomorrow evening and Friday morning. Its very wet outside now sleeting and the wind has really picked up and so has the temp now sitting on 4.2C

1.8 degrees, and I'll call that 'sleet' that's melting on the car.

Mmm I thought Baldwin St at the bottom was 30m asl?
I looked at a topography map:

http://www.topomap.co.nz

and you're right the 40m contour meets North Rd just above Baldwin St and the 60m goes exactly through the corner where the Tavern sits. The valley floor is steeper than I thought.

The snow rain has eased right up.

Reports varying in different areas, heavy full on snow in places like Methvan and Oxford which is to be expected being higher up but grapel in Rangiora flakes in Islington and also Timaru.
That radar really isn't doing too well its showing light rain over us but its real steady here almost heavy, no ice form that I can see as yet though.

Totally agree with you there stormchaser, ive heard people saying in the past its snowing when infact its hailing.
On another note 1.8 metres of snow for Marlborough WOW!! Gosh what a storm this is going to turn out to be.
