Re: Widespread Storms, South Island 23/2/14
Just been too a couple damage houses, mostly tree damage and iron roofing lifted. Rural area so we are lucky there.

Nice photo of funnel in the vines!
A very good set up for funnel clouds today given shear(vorticity) and the exceptionally cold air/convergence/jet stream (rapidly ascending air).

Fabulous pics! You guys must have had a great chase!
Seeing footage of the size of the hail seems akin to a super cell?

Awesome chase day! only managed to get a couple of photos.
Sadley wasnt onto it aswel as i normally am today..missed the tornado, particulary the amberly one, so atleast steve was more onto it.
Definately mesocyclone structure to it as it was passing into lincoln area, what do you class this storm as nzstorm? HP or LP supercell?
We have had an amazing season for storms this time, about 3 or 4 supercells in one season, incredible stuff.
I wonder what the winter will bring snow wise for us

Re: Widespread Storms, South Island 23/2/14
Just about to upload the Southbridge video. Havent seen any others of this tornado yet.
Great chase today, best yet!
Drove to Rolleston where I sat for a half hour before heading to the the south side of Lake Ellesmere. Saw the first tornado inland, took about 30sec to get my camera rolling but caught the jest of it. After this headed toward the city following the circulation. Watched a wall cloud to the north from the airport and kept heading north. Saw the second Tornado south of Leithfield on the state highway. Traffic was soooo slow it was frustrating. It was hailing at the time and I guess the novelty of the Tornado cause everyone to slow right down.
Followed it to Amberly were I desperating needed petrol. The power was out so I couldn't get petrol, ended up spending an hour in Amberly. Popped into a couple of damaged properties to see if there was anything I could do but the damage was only superficial to the properties, mostly up turned trees and snapped trees. One Pine I saw was snapped half way up then then snapped again, a middle piece (about 5m in length + Branches) was thrown about 50m from the tree. Yet the house only 25m away was untouched!
Saw one house on the south side of Amberly, where I guess it crossed the state highway with its roof completely off and iron about 200m from the dwelling

A large rotary cloud passed over here prior to the SW change, looked like a gust front. There were some rotations within it but nothing significant. Looked like it evolved further north from here.

Re: Widespread Storms, South Island 23/2/14
The only strike I managed to capture, was positioned poorly, too many trees and houses in the way to video effectively. Still got one so I guess it wasn't all for nothing!
