Had a heavy shower with pea hail in central Auckland 2.30pm.

When I drove through Mt Wellington there was evidence of a decent hail storm there with hail lying about the place. Photo.

How much do you think that storm dropped? Looks like a few cm on the ground?

Wow at the hail photo. I don't recall ever seeing as much hail as that in Howick!
Today we just had scattered hailstones falling for a couple minutes, then it turned to rain.

A good fall of hail there, we had pea size hail here for 5 mins this afternoon but nothing like that.

Some nice Cb clouds south of Auckland later this afternoon, I drove south for a photo.

Some impressive rainfall totals from the Gisborne area yesterday.
Metservice says Gisborne Airport had 122mm and Tolaga Bay had 177mm.
Not surprised Civil Defence have become concerned:

There was some convergence around Ellerslie that made the convection a bit more aggressive there.

This set up was in the model with a pronounced polar vortex at 500mb. But the question mark was whether there would be a trigger given the time of year.

yes, you could see showers were rotating around a center, the ones over Northland...that center being Auckland/Waikato,,with a SE change over the central NI and rain into eastern NI
yes we had a bit of wind covergence here that got it developing...northerly on one side and southerly on the other side (both weak though)

From what I could see much of the Auckland region stayed dry with most of the showers forming along a weak afternoon convergence line which developed from the Waitakeres to central/east Auckland.

Yesterday I got caught in a wild shower. It had winds gusting about 80km I would estimate. I wasn't far from Tims but his station didn't get it.

Metservice has an overnight low of -6°C for Reefton on Saturday morning. Can't recall seeing anything that low forecast before.
And then there's 4 days of snow next week.
Could be an interesting 7 days.

MS did have a low risk of T-storms for Buller for Thurs morn and a moderate risk with hail for Westland, so not too far off. :D

Showers here today have been very isolated, cloud/sunshine mix, 8 -15C, mod to fresh SW.

More cold trough activity next week for NZ but at this stage the troughing looks less cold but the precipitation more widespread
