General February Weather
Amazing how green and lush things are at whakamaru and South Waikato. Even saw silage being made. Meanwhile it's brown at home.
I'm at palmy for the week this week. Hoping to catch some decent weather but nothing looking overly interesting.

Re: General February Weather
Quite dark and overcast here this morn, with the odd brief drizzle/shower.
I see MS's computerised 2-hrly graphs show 98mm for Akld tomorrow, incl. 30mm in the last 2 hrs…

Yea saying 60mm for Hamilton. We don't get 60mm off a front. It's normally 30 and less. It takes a more complex setup to get more than 40mm for Hamilton.

Re: General February Weather
GFS has been showing a very slow moving frontal zone over us around Thursday , there will be embedded heavy showers given our dewpoint temperature will be over 20C.
Camping in the Coromandel this weekend so hopefully fine weather by then.

Re: General February Weather
Certainly been a warm couple of days on the east coast of the SI. We hit 31.5°C yesterday and currently sitting on 29.4°C today, with it looking like it'll go a bit higher.
Nice to have some warm days after many rather miserable ones, but 30's a bit on the warm side.....

Re: General February Weather
Yes, last time I saw a front drop more than 60mm was due to the front completely stalling and staying stationary.jamie wrote:Yea saying 60mm for Hamilton. We don't get 60mm off a front. It's normally 30 and less. It takes a more complex setup to get more than 40mm for Hamilton.

I think (perhaps wrongly) around valentines day often coincides with the hottest spell of summer

That shot for twizel doesn't look much hotter than Hamiltons. Only got phone so can't post it but it does look similar.

18 days since the 23rd January at 28 or above. Compare that to twizel of 17 days 28 and above since the 22nd jan.
Factor in the humidity difference (heat index for Hamilton sits into the 30's when just below 30).
Also factor the minimums, twizel between 6-16 and Hamilton 12-21.
Also factor how long the temp is that high for (with Hamiltons higher low it would sit at 28 or above much longer than twizel with it quickly dropping off there.
I would argue they aren't too dissimilar. Although your right, twizel is "hotter" according to these graphs.
Fom the 23 and 22 for Hamilton and twizel respectively I count the number days below 28 as 6 and 9. So makes a big difference if you include 28 or exclude 28.

Eastern sky was orange a quarter of an hour ago, has faded a bit now.
Rain, bringing that lovely "tropical" scent it does at this time of year.

Re: General February Weather
Looks like the bulk of the rain will occur tonight/overnight for the North Island.
Looks like tomorrow we have a weak front slow moving across the North Island with a drizzle/heavy shower mix.

Re: General February Weather
Yes, a good run of very high maximum temperatures this Feb in Twizel.( by NZ standards)ndoa wrote:Twizel is hot this month
In the case of Hamilton the humidity is a big factor with temperature, Waikato has the inland heating with regular high dewpoint temperatures.

Re: General February Weather
met service are talking about non convective rain over the NI
and yet were are getting pulsy convective heavy showers here...
they are not easy to see on the rain radar as they are covered by the general upper level rain
but you can see them running down in the NNE flow over northland

Re: General February Weather
Seems to be some deep instability crossing over later tonight. The Bsch gfs suggests thunderstorms but I don't see any other triggers.

And having the Tasman sea continuing to warm this must be in enhancing the systems that what we are seeing over the next day or so.
