Warm day here once the NW Arch cloud thinned and moved away to the north.
28.1C the max for today but I bet Riccarton got up to 33C

Re: General January Weather
Beautiful day in Canterbury today. Lovely and warm. Not much wind around atm. But that will probably change later. I'm thinking there could be a few heavy showers/thunderstorms up coastal Canterbury later on. Very coastal though! Ashburton up towards birdlings flat and BP

Lovely and warm here too, but windy with the odd huge gust every so often.

Re: General January Weather
I was thinking that, earlier, with the warmish southerly coming through. There was some development this afternoon but rather weak, and the upper dynamics not coming to much use.mikestormchaser wrote:Beautiful day in Canterbury today. Lovely and warm. Tomorrow's prospect don't look all that good either.

Re: General January Weather
That southerly wind change never even made it this far north, just remained a mean NW wind day.

Re: General January Weather
Up to 29.4C here today before the southerly wind change, which didn't really lower the temperature all that much.
Back to NE this evening, down to 15C @ 10pm from last night's overnight low of 19.2C.

Re: General January Weather
Looking like eastern parts of NZ could have a very warm January by the time the month ends. The persistence of strong W flows means there could be some temperature records I think. Napier has reached 32C in the last 3 days.

Re: General January Weather
More precisely coastal eastern parts as these winds we are getting a lot atm of have a cooling effect on the inland areas, the lack of slow moving or stationery highs over NZ over the last few summers means we've had cooler summers. I mentioned a week ago that i cant remember the last time a stationery high was parked up over NZ during summer.NZstorm wrote:Looking like eastern parts of NZ could have a very warm January by the time the month ends. EC has been pretty consistent in it's forecast starting from Wednesday next week of exceptionally cool and wet conditions for Canterbury for an extended period?NZstorm wrote:Looking like eastern parts of NZ could have a very warm January by the time the month ends. Re: General January Weather
Your right there Richard, has been a while since I've seen a slow moving high over NZ. Despite my tendency for wanting storms a high sticking around for a week or two would be great! lol.

Way overdue. Locally we already have the worst run of months for 24 years and enough is enough.Thunder wrote:Your right there Richard, has been a while since I've seen a slow moving high over NZ. Despite my tendency for wanting storms a high sticking around for a week or two would be great! lol.

Re: General January Weather
Sunday is looking humid over the North Island but more so where heating can occur. The likes of Whangarei/ Napier up to 30C in an 18C+ dewpoint air mass.

Re: General January Weather
This prolonged period of westerly quarter winds weve had here for the last 4-5 days is more spring like than Jan. Today's WNW at least is not strong and gusty like that of yesterday.

Re: General January Weather
Nice fine day here with southerly winds but after reverting back to the NE it gradually clouded over from the west.
Yes, it is interesting as the anticyclones have not been very strong , around the maximum of the 1020hPa mark.

Re: General January Weather
Must be getting very dry in the far North, kerikeri only showing 4.8mm for the past month at MetService . Whangarei 6.8mm, Whangaporoa 9.4mm. Auckland city only doing slightly better for rainfall.
There is a front coming in tomorrow but likely very little rainfall with it north of Waikato

Re: General January Weather
A deep Tasman low keeps popping up in the models for next weekend.
This would disrupt the harvest
