Another 14mm here today - total 152mm to date.
And yes, all that lightning today seems to have missed Akld so far.
Here's Blitzortung's CG's for the last 12 hrs…

We really dodged a bullet here today. Barely any rain since sunrise while some areas close by have had an inch or more.
This is by far our worst flood we have seen in 30 years on this farm. Hard to tell if the water is still rising.

Very localised though, only 15mm here in Amberley. I gather there was a really heavy downpour in Rangiora around 1.30-2pm.melja wrote:Much more rain here north of chch with 41mm for the event so far and very wet under foot.

80mm being modelled by MS for the next 24h in chch so serious flooding if that comes true.
From the press regarding previous rainfall amounts causing serious flooding.
"Glassey said 73mm fell in the 30 hours from the afternoon of March 4, 2014 – the storm which caused the first of several floods to hit the Flockton area after Canterbury's earthquakes. More than 56mm fell from April 17, again causing flooding."

westerly wind change here now
with a period of rain showers and a bit of a temperature drop
not the active cold font crossing at this time that the models had

Massive downpour with windblown rain all over the Auckland CBD. That line is developing fast.

What will be most interesting is the impact of 100mm plus on the damaged hill country beyond Kaikoura. Was fascinating flying over it the other day. This is their biggest rain event since the 7.8

Around 17mm so far from this system here to 10pm, tonight.
Not much wind, none of those strong easterlies that was predicted.
I wonder if the SW winds will be that strong as the low moves further away to the east?

It's worth looking at rainfall for the last 30 days.
EW site at Mangatangi. This not untypical for the region I think. 650mm in 30 days.

I would disagree. 650 is a lot for that area and especially to have it this time of year.NZstorm wrote:It's worth looking at rainfall for the last 30 days.

I'm at 460mm in the past 50 days. Considering we have been struggling to get 1000mm for the year recently, this makes 460 huge! No wonder we have the flood we do.

I agree its likely an all time record. I meant untypical of the region in the last 30 days.jamie wrote: I would disagree. 650 is a lot for that area and especially to have it this time of year.

Oh I see what your saying. Yea many places from there north to Auckland along the East have had over half their annual rainfall in just 30 days.NZstorm wrote:

all I know is our lawn needs mowing!
and that autumn calving herds have a heap of grass (but mud too, but that will dry out quicker than it would in the spring )

My station is showing 417mm in the last 30 days, by far the wettest 30 day period I can ever remember! This Hunua weather station has a whopping 700mm in the same period.
Sun is out this morning and feeling a bit more fresh, a nice change.

Lovely hook shape to the rain radar as the low spins away, bringing heavier stuff into town now. Spot on forecasting by the metservice
