Re: General May Weather
It's west to east the rain at the moment so kinda expected, but the colder surge boots it up the bum from about 3am to midday tomorrow so the rain will be more widespread and heavy in places.Razor wrote: Tue 11/05/2021 20:50 The Chch Rain Forcefield is evident again. Re: General May Weather
Warm day here with scattered high cloud and a maximum of 20.3C.
Not much wind but at 4:30pm the southerly whooooooosh-ed through with leaves everywhere and coming onto rain not long after. Gradual drop in temperature occurred. Rain through the evening but now has eased off, with 8.1mm for today.
Seemed most of the wet weather went out to sea which is a bit of a nuisance as the sea is wet already and doesn't need watering

Yep just arrived at work, feels like more than that overnight. Some surface flooding along arterial roots in chch city (leaves in gutters don't help) but MUCH MUCH needed rain. Its still raining a nice steady rain now

12mm clearance soon. No drought breaker as there's no real follow up evident on the horizon, this will settle the dust for a few days though

Wondering when will we finally get a decent rain event. Dams continuing to slowly drop, at 49.6% now (27% below normal) - only getting small rainfall totals which are mostly absorbed into the ground

Re: General May Weather
I think the upper level pattern still looks a bit warm for the upper NI, later in the month or June Auckland will be more in the firing line for the cold upper systems, bring them on.
Next couple of nights not looking so cold for Auckland now as they were earlier in the week, GFS.

The wettest day of the year finally arrived today with 15mm locally and 11mm at the airport. That takes the YTD to 93mm now. That'll certainly help green things up now. Ground still rock hard for this time of year though.
Looking ahead, very little to no real moisture on the cards over the next 10 days. Here hoping May ends with a bang!

Monday/Tuesday could be a near miss for some more rain in the double digits. Worth keeping an eye on.Cantab03 wrote: Wed 12/05/2021 18:10 The wettest day of the year finally arrived today with 15mm locally and 11mm at the airport. That takes the YTD to 93mm now. Re: General May Weather
Another 5.3mm of rain overnight and a sprinkling of snow on the foothill peaks this morning.
Southerly wind dying out and cloud and wind gradually easing and becoming fine and calm this evening with frost tendency overnight.
Today's max was just 11C in full sunshine.

Picked up 5mm here early this morning on the SE change, I see it was quite localised.

Re: General May Weather
I see Mercer got 18mm earlier today with the passage of the overnight trough.
A reasonable looking shortwave trough modelled for the west of the North Island Sunday. Something to keep an eye on, hopefully, an active line can develop otherwise it could end up being just a spotty storm set up.

Re: General May Weather
Coolest morning of the year here so far as I expected, down to 3.4C. The crazy thing is, it may well be 13-14C warmer than this at the same time tomorrow! Massive swing for here

Re: General May Weather
Silly question. Whats the chances the tropical low coming down NZs east coast interacts with the polar fronts and low from the south around 24/25th May. If so this would inject cold air into a mid low off the coast. This would energize it massively. Still a very long shot.
On another note. Coldest morning so far this year. 2021. -3.5 deg out oxford ways.

Yes, a big change in air mass coming as air from the subtropics moves down onto us tonight, a dewpoint of 16-17C at 6am tomorrow.David wrote: Fri 14/05/2021 07:42 Coolest morning of the year here so far as I expected, down to 3.4C. Re: General May Weather
Aint gonna see any tropical depressions near NZ this time of year. But the week after next looks to be significantly colder than any so far, and has been consistently called as such in the longer range guidance for some time. Any disturbance in the force that week will have consequences.talbotmj15 wrote: Fri 14/05/2021 08:20 Silly question. After a frost this morning it was lovely fine day but cloud did increase to the NW to SW, i.e. westward with not much wind.
Up to 10.5C for today.

Re: General May Weather
And similarly we had 23mm, wasn't expecting such a good solid rain. Temperature peaked at 18.2C early morning.
