Looks to be alot of high cloud across the South Island with the distinctive Canterbury Arch.
I notice Auckland Airport did not report any precipitation on their obs today but here in central Auckland we had a rather persistent light rain up until about mid afternoon when it cleared. Looks to have been a weak low level trough over the area, quite typical with the onset of an Northeasterly flow.
As for the trough over the north next week. Have to wait and see. Latest ECMRF has it developing well clear of us out to the NE.

Rubbish! We got around 6km/Hr up here today - After the last couple of weeks, everyone thought THAT was a gale!Foggy Hamilton wrote:.....wind speeds of 110km/h See Michael, now that's a gale!
We too got the twilight rain, only a passing dump from a scrawny Cu tower though

Indeed - I've seen a few years' worth of annual summary on windruns - of the regular stations, SW Cape seems to have the highest average windspeed (about 38kph!!). Other windy spots on their (NIWA) list are Brothers Is, Castlepoint, Puysegur etc.Foggy Hamilton wrote:yes, i bet, but i'm talking about the south-west cape on the Stewart Island, but then again no one lives there so it doesnt matter

Dont you just love summer it's 28dg at 11:40am here could reach 35dg again like the other Saturday.phew
Have to look out for fires the risk has gone from moderate to high in the last week but some brief rain on Sunday and some showers on Monday might fix that for abit until the hot temperatures arrive and dry it all out again.
Cheers

Re NW winds and human effects - never bothered me much, but some people find a typical NW-er quite enervating. I did notice that if the "arch" was fully present and so no sun was shining that I sometimes felt a bit listless, but if the sky was clear enough for sunshine then things felt fine.Jasestrm wrote:Dont you just love summer it's 28dg at 11:40am here could reach 35dg again like the other Saturday.phew

Doesn't really affect me but I'd agree that it feels better with a clearer sky. Maybe it makes more sense because it's hot and sunny ?RWood wrote:Re NW winds and human effects - never bothered me much, but some people find a typical NW-er quite enervating. It did actually feel hot today believe it or not when it was 27dg at 10am this morning it felt hotter than yesterdays 27dg. If that makes any sense.
32dg here today I think CHCH was about 30dg not bad day with that high cloud burning off and staying away just sorta sat around to the NW of me all day.
NW wind arrived about 2pm as it was NE for much of morning very light though .
Could be into 30's again tomorrow as a forecasted 28dg is in force with many people flocking to beaches again probly more tomorrow as it's a Saturday or will they all be at the Cricket? .
Cheers

A couple of picks I took at Jade.
A view of the game, and Watch Out Cairns at bat (look closely)
