Often it takes just a slight tilt of the flow towards the north, and it clears in Chch - a 'critical northeasterly' in other words. When the regional flow over NZ is truly NE/E-biased and things are not too anticyclonic over NZ and Tasman lows provide enough moisture then there have been some strikingly dull months in the past in the east of SI (plus West Coast as well usually).
Summer at last

I find it very funny, so many people whinge on when we get two weeks of rainy weather then it only takes a few hot sunny days for the whining to start again. Weather is weather. If you dont like it invest in a big house with an air conditioning system and ignore it altogether. Otherwise enjoy its diversity - no amount of complaining will change anything.dogmelon wrote:This country's weather is crap to say the least. Perhaps you would have an opinion on why Ch'ch is (at least according to the records) sunnier than it used to be (airport and earlier site records used to show a yearly average of 2000 hrs or less but 30-yr mean is now over 2100). Is there any reason to think the amount of easterly cloud is a little less than it used to be?tich wrote:Often it takes just a slight tilt of the flow towards the north, and it clears in Chch - a 'critical northeasterly' in other words. When the regional flow over NZ is truly NE/E-biased and things are not too anticyclonic over NZ and Tasman lows provide enough moisture then there have been some strikingly dull months in the past in the east of SI (plus West Coast as well usually).

Apparently the heat is setting off fire alarms everywhere around Chch today.
You guys can't be used to a few therms
Up here, we just have problems trawling up enough crews for the volunteer brigades!

(currently trying to find some breeze that isn't hot under a 35C blue dome )

Not quite as warm today, or at least tonight as yesterday. Dry southerly change came through today and dropped the temp.
I was at the cricket, drinking too much beer with the few students about at the moment. Otago did well in the end against those dirty Cantabs, but unfortunately J. Wilson only scored 4.

There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

Despite the very warm upper temps (-12 @ 500mb) I'm thinking the atmosphere could be potentially unstable right now (or is unstable...?). The very high surface temps plus that light Southerly coming through raised the dewpoint to 13C(not sure on thickness of this surface moisture though, take it back to 11C to be safe). I guess you'd need a convergence to set it off and things might start happening? Or perhaps the high wind speeds at upper level's are surpressing things like metservice say?
Anyway, I look outside now and see no note of anything stormy at all, so yeah. It doens't look good despite what my interesting lines on a skew t say! lol.
Still around 30C and it's nearly 8:00pm with no wind! It's quite calm, perfect Michael weather!

The 850mb temps (1500m) are quite warm today over central and northern NZ, around the 20C mark. That will mean some schorching temps in sheltered inland spots, over 30C.
As for Auckland we have 7/8 stratocu which will burn off quickly today, will get warm in sheltered spots like Henderson (28C), but stay coolish over the Manukau harbourside suburbs such as where Micheal lives(21C).

Good thermal contrast across Auckland region today with a southwester.Just SW here as usual keeps the temps low due to the wind
Temps in the low 20's in south to high 20's in sheltered west.
Cooler southern suburbs got the persistent murk as seen in photo.

Hey back from my awsome holiday down south in Wanaka had some nice weather went away just at the right time .
Most days were over the 20's with just one day of heavy showers which was the first day.
Besides that with the good weather I managed to get out and do plenty like Kayaking on Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka plus 4 wheel driving a few walks and plenty of relaxing.
PRETTY HOT!! in Geraldine today as I went through around 3pm iam guessing around 29-30dg it was schorching.
I will put up some of my holiday pics later there are some nice ones I took very photographic .
25dg is the expected high here tomora but it will probly make it to around 27-28dg not bad if it does it's about time the weather comes right and with that 33dg the other day here its sure showing it's returned.
Although I was talking to the camp mangager and he reackons something big is going to happen around March this year hmmm I think I will switch off from that and enjoy the summer sun.
Cheers
JASON TIPPET.
