It warmed up over Southland last night, freezing level up at 900m midnight. That was not expected by Met Service. Goes to show how fical this cold outbreak is.
Campbell Island is reporting an air temperature this morning of minus 2C with WSW winds of 32kts. How cold is that? Anyway that particularly cold air is currently not headed for the SI but away to the east.

Went out to do the morning obs and temp felt alot warmer from the 2 degrees and 20 kt westerly at midnight. Temp was 7 degrees at 0900. Still occasional Cb showers of small hail mixed in with the rain. After yesterday quite surprised to see my max for the 24 hours was in the wee small hours when the temp got to 9 degrees .Now blowing westerly of 20-25 kts.Chill factor is tolerable though. As Steven stated a weak warm front must have popped through.

There was no warm front passing over Christchurch this morning - but another hard frost instead. Apparently there was a light dusting of snow on the Port Hills from yesterday afternoon's front. TV1 weather showed it tonight - I noticed the hills had a lightish tinge to them once the weather had eased late yesterday afternoon, but the snow cover must've been too thin to be obvious from the city centre.
