Now NZ that has been having proper summer weather lately, SE Australia has just had a taste of the kind of weather we experienced in December - Heavy rain/flooding, big thunderstorms, gales, hail, and even heavy snow on the mountains. Check out the threads in the Weatherzone forum quoted above.

But then there are always vast areas of Aus. that are getting fine weather on a given day...Perth is very reliable in Jan/Feb - nil rain there for Jan. and the usual endless sunshine.

Vast, sparsely inhabited areas (except for Perth and coastal Queensland) - the majority of Aussies live in the southeast of the continent, so the media coverage of extreme events there is understandably bigger. Interestingly Adelaide hasn't missed out on this stormy outbreak - it's had hail for the 1st time in February since 1977. (cold airstream hail I believe, rather than convective heat thunderstorm hail)
