The weekly pattern seems to be continuing. MetService is predicting snow to about 200-300 metres in the south, and 600-700 metres in the central and lower North Island this weekend. GASP seem to be pushing for it to be even colder, with the 528 thickness line reaching up to the Bay of Plenty on Sunday. (the ECMWF site seems to be down at present) Sounds more like a repeat of the last cold outbreak, rather than the big one earlier in the month.
Its actually colder and wetter up here than it was in the "Mother of Fronts" 2 weeks ago Of course we will "cop the lot" up here as usual just like the TV presenters tantalizing us yet again "Fine Sunny for the majority" Come on its about time they come up here and see how often the sun won't shine
Have a look at Macquarie Island weather tomorrow morning. That will give a good indication of how cold this next change will be. Met service predictions look good though.
Front over Auckland today kept skies quite cloudy with patchy rain.
I noticed the odd cb about giving localised heavier falls. Tops of these around 5000m (not big).
Its very bitter in Auckland today only 10c and the sky has that watery look with random scattered clouds as though it will start howling from the southwest anytime (its still as a millpond at present but has been showery)
Macquarie Island temperature at 11.30am was 0.9.
Very snowy on the 10.00am webcam picture.
Fine cool clear day in Ashburton, looks like a bitter day for Canterbury tommorrow .
Cheers.
Looks cold down south this morning but the front looks weakish.
I like the look of those cbs out in the Tasman. Should be some squally
hail and perhaps thunder associated with them. Showery already this morning in AK.
Still scundgy in Auckland-Has been since Monday afternoon
About time you get rain down there-Is it going Southerly "enough" down there?
Wellington webcams still shows up fine and clear as it always does(Theyre now 300 hours total yearly sunshine) more than we are now and its only July.
Yes, a bit of a non-event here in ChCh (or a fizzer). Only drizzly rain here. I can see patches of blue-sky now.
I see MetService are forecasting another 'Blast' to come through tomorrow with hail and thunder.
If this does happen I'll 'eat my hat" !!!
Yeah bit of a fizzer alright, showers died off at midday, left with a cold southerly wind and clearing skies towards the coast.
As Steven mentioned the front seemed to weaken as it travelled over the south is.
Tommorrow will be a non event as well.
Cheeers.
Go the AB's.
A sleet/small hail shower has just hit Chch. About 3C. The 6PM radar showed bright blobs approaching Banks Peninsula from the south, so I guess this is just coastal.
Still about 3C in Chch with some passing sleety showers. Seems like the southerly flow is turning out colder and more unstable than MetService were predicting earlier today, with snow flurries to lower levels than the 500 metres forecast. However, it seems to be just coastal here in Canterbury, and nothing like the polar blast early in the month.
The 9pm satellite picture shows a line of showers extending from the Otago peninsula right through to Banks Peninsula into Ch Ch,quite interesting.
Looks like a great skiing week coming up,ahh my holidays have fallen at the right time.
Cheers. .
Mostly a fine day here in Chch so I didn't have to ... eat my hat.
I did notice that according to the radar, that the showers did remain off the coast.
Barometer rise here from 9pm with a bit of the freshoning of the southerly.
Well here's to a boring weather week ahead, ... Yawn with it becoming milder. Micheal will be pleased!
Back to in front of the fire
It wasn't so fine out on Banks Peninsula on Sunday. Showers became frequent around noon, and even though they cleared up about midafternoon, they returned again in the evening, ceasing before dawn on Monday. There was a light dusting of snow on the peninsula above about 500 metres on Sunday morning, but much of it melted with the rain around midday (patches remaining from previous snowfalls earlier in the month) - could've been a warm front.
