Weather turning unsettled

Unread post by NZstorm »

Last week the whole country had sunshine but this coming week looks quite unsettled. And interestingly the latest ECMWF model is suggesting a big snow fall (to low levels) possible in Canterbury later in the week.

I hav'nt looked at the thickness. I know from experience not to trust a low over central NZ/high southern oceans. Its a good scenario for inland snow. :)

It almost looks the scenario of a low over the NI and a front then it will fill over the NI and move SE and then a weak ridge will come in then later in the week with a NW stream for most of us.

The trough over the north has turned thundery overnight.....most of the activity out to sea just east of Northland. Plenty of static on the am band here at the moment (distant). Just starting to rain in Auckland now with a few heavy bursts. Temperature mild for 7am, 14C.

I watched about 3 CBs pop up and mature on the way into work today - they were showing against the dawn sky. Hopefully we will be in for a few.

Cheers,

G

Showers seem to have turned to persistent rain now Brian, so you won't like that. Yes, quite unstable air today but the cb's in the Auckland area looked weakish....more intense punchy clouds visiable to the north though.

Image

Cumulonimbus with multi-pulse structure but this cloud rather weak and tops to around 8000m. Photo taken this morning at Coatesville just north of Auckland.

Image

The underside of a large anvil that came off a cb well out to the NW.
A sign here that there was strong convection about.
