A bad year for ski operaters alright. A good reason not to buy season passes. The skiing season dosen't look very promising but then?
Havn't seen any figures yet but i'm sure temperatures this July will be 1 or 2C above normal for Auckland, mainly through milder night time temps. Absolutely no sign of any frost here this winter. I think the coldest night so far was around 5C.

I dunno about up there but it's been a pretty dismal ski season in the South Island.Manukau heads observer wrote:...so its not as bad as you guys are making out surely...
The falls have been few and far between...almost nothing in-and-around Omarama since April!, and not even much on Benmore at 1,900m...
Unless there are some freak weather bomb-type events, I think the southern skifields will be closing as early as they opened late.

Saw the smoke today from sumner:
Police investigate Sumner fire
24/07/2005 18:12:02
Firefighters have brought under control a scrub fire burning on hillsides above the Christchurch suburb of Sumner. The fire broke out in the Heberden Avenue area, with the smoke clearly visible from the central city.
The fire started around 4 o'clock this afternoon, but extinguishing it proved challenging because it had taken hold in thick scrub on steep terrain. That made it hard for fire crews to get their water close to the seat of the fire. However calm weather helped, and emergency crews had the fire under control by about 5 o'clock.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire, and were seen speaking top a group of boys found near where the fire started.

Ironically this mild northwesterly flow has finally delivered a good dumping of snow to the mountains, as I could see coming back to Chch this morning. It's only above about 1400m on Mt Hutt and neighbouring ranges, but it's a lot thicker than in recent weeks, even after some cold (but relatively dry) southerlies.I dunno about up there but it's been a pretty dismal ski season in the South Island.
