Aucklands July sunshine was 121hours (133). Hence slightly below average. But NIWA say Auckland was the warmest town in the country for July, which is usually the case anyway. :)

Not much of a score, but in July 1964 (noted for a string of depressions and wet cloudy NW conditions almost everywhere) totals as low as 36 hrs were noted. It's indicative of the oddity of NZ weather that the best ever sunshine total in any month in NZ, allowing for daylength, for places with reasonable exposure, was recorded at Blenheim one July (231 hrs, about 84% of the possible amount, using the only available horizon info.)

July 1964 (noted for a string of depressions and wet cloudy NW conditions almost everywhere)
From what I've read (NZ Gazette - useful monthly climate reports; same as current NIWA ones) July 1964 was much milder than normal, yet with much snowfall on the high country - proving a mild winter month needn't necessarily mean a bad ski season.

I recall some July's in the 1980s were much warmer than usual, though obviously not more than 1.2C+ nationally.

and the 80's had some big NW storms during the spring too, with big active cold fronts extending way up into the tasman
i wonder what this spring is going to be like?

According to NIWA, warmer than normal.

We'll have to wait and see... I think it's anyone's guess

Hawke's Bay was supposed to have a drier than normal winter, according to NIWA (stands for No Idea What's A-coming). it turned out to be a wet one.
