Yes we did... But Hauraki is slightly closer to Auckland than Hamilton, right? Can't take any lightning photos with my camera, need to upgrade sometime. Still doesn't help when the neighbours build a great garage infront of our northerly viewspwill wrote: Foggy you must have had a better view of this Storm from your place.
Looks like some late day heat convection, noticed some Cu towers and Cb going up near sunset.
Yes NZstorm I remember the August '03 hailstorm, light SE winds brought warm temps (18c+) in the region and then convective hail and lightningDaytime heating is now starting to play a roll in afternoon convection forming over land areas.
Over Northland and perhaps down into the Auckland area, weakly convergent southeast winds together with afternoon temperatures reaching the upper teens, lead to a moderate risk of showers and a few thunderstorms forming along the convergence line. These will dissipate towards evening. Also, thunderstorms may produce rainfall intensities of 5-15mm/hr, due to their relatively slow motion from the southeast.
Over the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, there is a low risk of a few thunderstorms this afternoon, but there may be a lack of wind convergence to trigger them. In Bay of Plenty, this will rely on a weak sea breeze developing near the coast.
Over Northland and down through Auckland to eastern Waikato and western Bay of Plenty, scattered thunderstorms are developing and are expected to last through to late afternoon or early evening. These storms are slow moving and rainfall rates could range from 10 to 20mm/hr and, they are accompanied by hail expected to be in the 10 to 20mm size range.
