Edit: woops, you did mention the waikato, great shot once again! Any others?
Edit again: Hopefully Foggy is out there doing thunderstormy stuff!

One AWESOME photo!!!
Your's and that one by AJ share best so far this year!
Yes a fantastic distant lightning show out there over near Hauraki plains, eastern Waikato tonight, lots of sferics popping away.. reminds me a lot of the March thunderstorm over Matamata, distant and pretty!
Please post a high-res version, stick it on my wallpaper
What was the exact time spwill?

Well not neccaserily driving a car, just being out there looking at the storm from your house etc. And it looks as if you've done that so well done, I would be doing the same. Yeah, that pic is definately great. Of gargantuan greatness!, there's that word...it must be good.
Thanks Spwill, hopefully there's some more stuff tonight or tomorrow. I got a pic like that (sort of) on the 23rd April, I'll see if I can find it. It's sort of annoying because if you don't know where the lightning is going to strike so you keep it at a wide angle. I did when getting the lightning below, once we had narowed down where the lightning was coming from we had to move on because the gust front caught up with us.
Cheers

Looks very american which is awesome!
Report from Thames:
Awesome!
I was actually doing some laser zone when things started to pick up
I was only expecting thunderstorms from middnight atleast.. with showers moving in from the tasman I guess this was very very convective.. Waikato convection at it's best???
Report from Thames:
the sky just opened up....it is snow white outdoors, hail about 3" thick for as far as I can see...the place is totally white, my brick decks, the driveway & the carsheds are all white...the poor animals

Yes we did... But Hauraki is slightly closer to Auckland than Hamilton, right? Can't take any lightning photos with my camera, need to upgrade sometime. Still doesn't help when the neighbours build a great garage infront of our northerly viewspwill wrote: Foggy you must have had a better view of this Storm from your place.
Looks like some late day heat convection, noticed some Cu towers and Cb going up near sunset.
I couldn't have got a photo like that from Hamilton with any camera.. Looks like Aucklanders had the best vantage point for this storm...

Well I missed the lightning show last night. An isolated storm that Met Service didn't predict and I certainly didn't expect. But looking back there was signs of instability yesterday afternoon with a couple of heavy showers/glaciated tops around Auckland.
Another case of a summer-like heat storm over Waikato in the month of August. There was a similar heat storm back in 2003 in August, well documented on this forum.

MetService didnt forecast it, GFS forecasted quite a bit of instability 24 hours out, and MetService didn't even nowcast!
Anyway... today!
Towering cumulus in all directions... GROWING NICELY Cb has already developed 80km or near SE of Hamilton, got pics here but no USB cable!!
GFS forecasted possible storms over the Waikato, yesterday. MetService dry weather.
16c, light southerly, partly cloudy with T/Cu
Goodbye winter!

Yes NZstorm I remember the August '03 hailstorm, light SE winds brought warm temps (18c+) in the region and then convective hail and lightningDaytime heating is now starting to play a roll in afternoon convection forming over land areas.
Over Northland and perhaps down into the Auckland area, weakly convergent southeast winds together with afternoon temperatures reaching the upper teens, lead to a moderate risk of showers and a few thunderstorms forming along the convergence line. These will dissipate towards evening. Also, thunderstorms may produce rainfall intensities of 5-15mm/hr, due to their relatively slow motion from the southeast.
Over the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, there is a low risk of a few thunderstorms this afternoon, but there may be a lack of wind convergence to trigger them. In Bay of Plenty, this will rely on a weak sea breeze developing near the coast.

Some bigger stronger looking cb's in the direction of Coromandal ranges.
Closer to Auckland looks to be weaker cb/turkey tower type cloud. The type of sky you would expect to see in summer.
Midday sounding had the 500mb temp at -25C.

Over Northland and down through Auckland to eastern Waikato and western Bay of Plenty, scattered thunderstorms are developing and are expected to last through to late afternoon or early evening. These storms are slow moving and rainfall rates could range from 10 to 20mm/hr and, they are accompanied by hail expected to be in the 10 to 20mm size range.
