Good! We still have a chance here of getting a new sun record for this month - you can always have the bad weather later.

We can't lose! WOOHOO!

It's been a magnificent day down here. I got slightly sunburnt while splitting logs. I notice some big clouds heading this way from the SW right now though.

A record is a record! :D

Some people have been predicting a "terrible" summer for the Mackenzie this year (ie rain, wind, cloud, blah), based upon I don't know what. I'm hoping for another long Mackenzie-type summer...maybe a new high temperature record! ;)

Another glorious day in the Mackenzie Gary? 8)

Been very nice here in Chch to. 18 C at the moment (nearly 19!). Would be cool if it hit twenty! Light winds here to but it looks like picking up from the NE soon methinks which may not let the temp get up to 20.

Cheers

Yep. Some high cloud around, but warm and dry. A high of 19° so far, but the temp trend is downward now, and the wind has gone easterly. That usually means crapola coastal weather via the Waitaki valley.

Glorious day here, though probably not more than 17C. Still a chance of sunshine record - need 29-30 hrs in last 3 days, this one should contribute around 10 measurable.

Fires in N.Otago? Maybe we will get a real summer this time.

Gary - I can remember from trips between Ch'ch and Central via the MacKenzie that on a few (rare) occasions there was some easterly cloud around Omarama while none at Tekapo. Do you have an opinion on what sort of conditions favour this?

Northland has been pretty interesting over the last 2 days (Hi from Kerikeri *waves*) We've been getting some lovely black as clouds, and drizzle.. Its like it's fooling me and saying YES i'm gonna turn into a thunderstorm, and then it doesnt. Most annoying!

Thunderstorm over Northland today would seem highly unlikely, atmosphere is very stable at 1034hPa

Anyway Hey! Welcome to the forum and it would awesome for regular reports from the wondeful Bay of Islands!

Cheers

I am guessing many North Island centres could get record sunshine this month. Many places from Wellington to Auckland will top 200hours!
August 2004 was a very sunny month for Auckland with 194hrs then. We should get past that this year. :)

I've often noticed clouds looked dark, but not producing anything their darkness would suggest. Quite often it's because the sun is shining, providing a bright contrast to the darker clouds.

Another fine mild day here in Chch; maybe morning frosts inland, but not here.

more settled weather still...
cant see any rain coming for the upper NI until maybe a low develops in the north tasman mid next week!!
we can and have had nice settled weather before say during the (what used to be ) the august school holidays, but that was like after getting some real weather....this big high and settled weather is just a change from being a little bit unsettled!, LOL

Invercargill sounding shows a big temperature drop with yesterdays unseasonably high freezing level of 3500m, plunging to 1500m overnight. Some cool southern ocean air getting in there.

Auckland sounding looks warmer in the lower levels today, than yesterday which should translate into milder afternoon temps.
Despite the fog, the air is very dry.

Had some fog here this morning but it had cleared by 9am. Dew points have been 8 - 12 c so some moisture there, hence the Fog.

Currently 17C under clear skies :D

Moisture layer is very shallow which is preventing any convective cloud.

Nothing on the cards as far as the models predicted. Only possiblity (shpuldnt even call it that) isnt till 12-13, not that I would normally trust models this far out, but desperate times call for desperate measures!
