Warm to start September

One of the best months is upon us, and a northerly flow is set to bring warmer than normal temps, especially in the east of borth islands...
Up to around 22c there from about Gisborne to Kaikoura and slightly less down to Dunedin, though places like Ashburton/Darfield should be warmer than most., nineteens in the northern districts apart from Auckland where it will be slightly cooler. (17c)

Central Austalia is also greatly warmer than normal, and is going to stay that way for a time.

I say write this winter off as the total non-event it was, and now look ahead to a (hopefully) great summer!

I see Alexandra was forecast to 22c today

, but was downgraded to 20c this morning by the MetService.

Napier/Hastings temp max's expected to remain over 21c for the next 5 days from tomorrow, possibly today. MS not forecasting this yet.

Canterbury should see atleast 2 days over 20c from Sep 1

These are very odd temperatures we would expect in late October/early November obviously, not late winter. Oh well, Bob McDavitt was right again.. early spring!

Currently fine with some cloud (3 oktas), slightly hazy, 16c
No fog this morning but we had a light frost.

Well I reckon by the weekend we would have had a fair bit if rain and action...

Depression with a centre of 985 is sitting around Tasmania... Has a front extending to Alice Springs...

SI west coast (southern half) will get rain, and there is a storm warning for winds at the moment off the far SW tip of the SI, but the front/trough is expected to loose the battle with the high, and so the rest of NZ will not get much impact except warmer than normal temperatures in eastern districts ....my 2 cents worth

great for the spring lambs etc

maybe we will get a wet summer
(will need to be, otherwise it will be a severe drought in alot of places!)

Actually, there is potential for even warmer temps if the NW'ester develops. 25C. But there may not be enough gradient for a land breeze.

On average there's between 30 and 100 cm of snow on parts of Benmore still, but it's disappearing rapidly. I can't recall seeing it melt so early in the year.

Balmy conditions in Alexandra, a top today of 23.9 degrees.

Yes Gary these temps are melting snow fast especially below 1600m

the last couple of days have been warm - 18C here - but with it being a bit warmer in other exposed areas with a light WSW blowing here until about 1:30pm/2pm then a bit of a NE had kicked in.
A bit hazy today.

Even at around 1,800-2,000m it's thinning quickly. I'm hoping the NWer kicks in again and dries my track out so I can get the JCB full of building materials up there!

6 hours of 15-20 knot Nw'ly from early morning brough the temp up to around 20deg in Amberley, then the NW dropped out between 11am and noon, and the temp shot up to 25deg, before dropping back to 18 as a light sea breeze came in. Surely the warmest August day for a very long time (I was going to do the long term stats for Chch, but checked and found they were under fog for most of the morning and struggled up to 13, while at midday Timaru was still under the fog and only on 7!)

Edit: The warmest August day in Chch was 23.2 in 1970, although 2002 was close with 22.8.

A sunny 19C here, light winds. Sea breeze at the Airport with 17C.

The mean daily maximum for Alexandra for the end of August would be around 12C. Hence 24C must be close to the all time record for an August day.

Interesting day here regarding the fine weather and fog.
It was fine here this morning but from Halswell inland to our new property in West Melton is was quite foggy blown in by a light southerly.
It cleared in the afternoon but blew in again on a light Se from about 5:30pm. Foggy all the way to about Milton Street but then cleared again.
It was quite warmish digging holes in the sun but when the fog came through, it cooled down quite quickly.
Overcast now and calm.

Must be warmer at your place Andy than where TV1 gets its figures from. (eg they were 'only' 22C today) Tokoroa should broken a record today with a 20C max - their recent 19C maximums on a few days in the last week or so could've been records as well.
Could be similar temperatures tomorrow, but less chance of records being broken, as it'll be September.

looks like Hot day up oxford way, fire at the moment inbehind Oxford in between mountain rd and Sladdens Bush rd. In scrub/bush.

This is were my brothers farm is so interesting to follow re-scanner

The TV temp for Alex is correct with mine about 90% of the time.

Are these temps on the TV weather, max on the day or 3pm obs or max till 3pm?

Perrhaps it's just Andy's weather station doesn't meet WMO standards??

So 25c in Amberly recently, 22c in Alexandra, 21's in Masterton, we rose to 19.3c, Gisborne 19.7, Blenheim has been warm

MetService forecasting 22c to Chch, rain radar is out too down there
Still, over 20c for the next 6 days to Napier/Hastings

Who know, there might even be September records broken today, even if it's only the 1st of the month. Already 19C in Chch - a northeasterly might spring up in the afternoon to send the mercury falling here, but inland could easily get a very warm afternoon.
Quite thick fog last night, but all gone in (the central city) by dawn.
