The hurricane certainly lived upto the predictions in the areas it struck full on. We will all be paying for this hurricane through our insurance premiums in the coming years.

I heard it mentioned on TV1 News tonight that the death toll could possibly reach as high as 50,000. That would be considered a high toll even in a 3rd World hurricane/typhoon. It would be worse than the 9-11 attacks which killed around 3000, and were considered the US's worst loss of life in single disaster (natural and unnatural) on home soil since early last century.
Remember New Orleans is a city of around 400,000 - a similar population to Chch.

Some of the information coming out regarding this hurricane is mind boggling. According to the New York Times, the insured loses could reach $35 billion. Total loses $100billion.

Photos here from a storm chaser who survived the full force of the hurricane.

I won't be donating any money for relief as the Yanks have plenty.
I'm glad that Fats Domino is safe and well

but the USA gives lots of relief funds to other countries, so why not help them out every now and then?

Agreed. USA gives a lot to the world.

I notice Geoff Mackley is still trying to get caught in a Typhoon. There is one knocking on the door of southern Japan.
