This article refers to a switch in the "PDO" which I understand has been
trying to reverse its phase since about 1998.

I believe this year we have already seen the 1st stages of this with plenty and plenty of easterlies beating anomalies, less rain from NW/SW cold front situations which is of concern."We have been seeing some of that, like flooding in the Bay of Plenty...what we would expect is weakening westerlies which allow more easterlies coming from the sub-tropics," he said.
As for the very deep low we just had which brought the severe cold snap was as a result of warmer than normal temperatures to Central Australia.. storm season there has started very early in Darwin.
