Overcast with cu/sc and a breezy westerly but I have noticed the cb tops through the cloud breaks. Waikato looks a high risk for a squally thunderstorm, Auckland lower risk.

SEVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR NORTHLAND AUCKLAND WAIKATO WAITOMO BAY OF
PLENTY TAUPO TAUMARUNUI TARANAKI WANGANUI MANAWATU GISBORNE HAWKES
BAY WAIRARAPA
ISSUED BY METSERVICE AT 1243hrs 16-Sep-2005

A DEEP DEPRESSION CARRIES THE POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAIN AND HIGH WINDS
ON SUNDAY. BEFORE THAT, HAVELOCK NORTH AND PAHIATUA MAY EXPERIENCE A
PERIOD OF WESTERLY GALES EARLY SATURDAY.

MetService forecasters expect a depression to spin-up very quickly
over the Tasman Sea on Saturday. By the time, the depression reaches
the North Island on Sunday, it should be very deep and capable of
producing high winds, heavy rain and storm tides.
Over the northern half of the North Island, northerly winds may
rise to gale force in many places, with the risk of severe gales,
especially around Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of
Plenty and northern Gisborne. The areas most likely to bear the brunt
of any heavy rain are the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty,
northern parts of Gisborne, the central North Island hill country and
Mt Taranaki. The fast-moving nature of this depression means the
heavy rain should last for less than 12 hours. The combination of
very low pressures (falling close to 970 hectopascals),very strong
winds and abnormally high tides during Sunday morning may produce
significant storm tides in some places, in particular, around the
Firth of Thames, the northern side of Waiheke Island and parts of the
the Bay of Plenty.

Before this happens ...

The east of the North Island south of Havelock North to Pahiatua may
experience westerly gales, with the risk of peak gusts reaching 110
km/h between midnight Friday 16th to 9am Saturday 17th.

This Watch will be reviewed by 9pm Friday

Forecast prepared by: Steve Ready

Watch out lambies too! as the MetService said on the SWO :)

This will be one hell of a ride :D

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
for Damaging Winds
for people in The Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Wide Bay and Burnett and
Southeast Coast districts
Issued at 4:35 pm on Friday 16 September 2005

Synoptic Situation: A strong cold front associated with a rapidly developing low
off the NSW coast is expected to move across southeast Queensland overnight.

Expect NW winds with gusts to 90 km/h to develop late tonight ahead of the front
and shift W/ SW at similar strength early Saturday morning. These winds will
ease late Saturday afternoon. The wind gusts will cause fallen trees and
powerlines and light structural damage.
The State Emergency Service advises that people in the affected area should:

- seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees
- secure loose outdoor items
- beware of fallen trees and powerlines

Contact the SES, listed under either State Emergency Service or your local
council in the White Pages, for emergency assistance if required.

The next warning will be issued by 11pm Friday

You lucky bast......

I'm so envious...but then pressures are low so thunderstorms are quite predictable....can't wait for the on-coming low to deliver, 970mbs sound as if it will produce a good punch :-$

Watch out Tauranga!

Huge gusts here with a very strong thunderstorm has now passed east and its heading for Tauranga!
Delivering very heavy rain/ bursts of hail, and very squally winds!
Over 100km/h i'm guessing

My family at the Top o' the hill at Hillcrest have their power out, roofs next door have been RIPPED off, trees down in a flash. Stunning lighting and thunder everywhere! The local emergencies are running hot.

I'm VERY thankful to Thor for not destroying the Hamilton East power board! :D

Ricky, your detector was not picking up the strikes here very well, at all :?

Thats pretty amazing! I was watching that squall line wondering what was in it!
Ours was much less impressive.. wind has been strong and eased/backed a bit temp drop 2 degrees and a bit of squally rain..

Yeah the detector here has great difficulty "seeing" into there.. a combination of local and distant hills I guess have to check against metservice :)
lightning has pretty much reached Tauranga now
Great night for a bikeride!
