Hamilton hit by storm

16/09/2005 23:34:02

A short sharp violent storm has hit Hamilton City.

Police report it moved across the Waikato city from east to west, bringing down several large trees over a wide area.

Many roads are blocked and a number of houses in the Hillcrest area of Hamilton and Cambridge Roads have had roofs blown off.

The Fire Service is dealing with these emergencies.

Motorists in the affected areas are being advised to take care.

Looks like you had a great storm down there Foggy. My thoughts on the wind damage is a big squall rather than tornado but I would be happy to be proven wrong, being a tornado fan. :D

Copy on the 1200Z NZWP sounding below for its worth. Helicty was 134 at Auckland.

Hey Guys.... I just heard a crash on my roof and upon further inspection discovered the remains of my WS2310 Anenometer in the gutter! Plastic housing looks to have disintegrated causing it to fall from the mounting pole into the the side of the house.Very gusty here now on the airfield, up around 50kms. Gutted I can't record any further wind data :x :x :x

Looks like this could be a big one!

Anyone got a spare 2310 windmeter they want to sell!!! :?:

oh no!
i have one you can have (for free)
maybe you could come out here tomorrow afternoon on the storm chase I have organised, and take it home with you :)
(see the thread I started http://www.weatherforum.org.nz/forum/vi ... php?t=1497 )
:)

maybe it is UV damage that made the plastic brittle?

Hey Brian,

Mate thats awfully good of you...I saw that thread, but unfortunately I am tied up with "family commitments" tommorow...I know, the first "real" storm for ages and I'll be helping Granma with her coffee....tell me about it, it guts me almost as much as losing the wind meter!!!

Can you post it to me? And I am happy to pay you for it! Let me know anyway...email me off list if easier:

Let me know what you want to do about that wind meter!!

Cheers mate,

The rainfall rate is picking up here - still pretty calm windwise though. We are sheltered by a small ridge to the north-east, but will cop it from the north west if the predicted wind levels hit.

[edit - dropped 2 hpa over the past 2 hours, now 1005]

Cheers,

G

I've been watching you barometer drop (online) - I thought Whangarei would be seeing wind by now... though I can hear the gum trees here getting some wind ;)

Cheers,

now that i did a hardware mod on my Davis VP to get 1 minute barometer updates instead of only every 15 minutes (a disapointing aspect of the VP), its really good to see the baro changes going on
last half hour its dropping a bit faster

bed time now...might be up early!!

Not a lot happening in Tauranga so far. As I head off to bed we've only had maybe half a dozen distant lightning flashes I've observed. Roll on the morning, barometer dropping (about 6 points so far this evening).

Wow!, hows this for incoming!?
Just got home from various <ahem> political functions... wind is starting to pick up, gusting 50kph now, just starting to rain, 1am radar shows an extensive very heavy band approaching, thunderstorms quite active over Northland...
Barometer dropping 2.5hPa/hr now at 996.9 hPa
damn just going to have to stay up all night lol

Just moderate rain tonight so far, had a heavy fall around 8.00pm.
Heaviest rain to make landfall soon in West Auckland
Sustained northerly winds of 83km/h at Cape Reinga

Lifted Indicies set to drop to -1.4 here with CAPE at 225j/kg
Auckland: LI of -1.1 and CAPE up to 280j/kg
Strong gusty/squally northwesterlies, not gale as the MetService quotes.
Lots of instability for Hawke's bay too
Heaps of wind shear from this low in the Tasman.

Looks like a squall line is going through Northland with thunderstorms north of Warkworth.

Something looks very juicy instore tonight for Auckland according to GFS 06z 17 September +24! Keep a watch

Rain heavyish now, with light NE, 12c, dewpoint 11c Baro: -1.48hPa/hour (994hPa) :D
