6cm+ round the garden now with a couple of cm settled on roads and pavements. The snow is very "sticky" so it's building up on branches, aerials, etc. Not surprised power is out in so many places even Akaroa now:

Well done for sticking your neck out Tony ... I got a fright when I came back from Aussie on Wed and saw the GFS weather map for today!

small hail in Amberley overnight, quite intense at one point. Sleet turned to snow around 9am and snowing hard now.
You wont hear much from me for the rest of the day as I am trying to get into Chch to take my son to a hospital appointment for his on-going treatment. We were scheduled to go in this evening but have decided to try to make it now, as it looks like it will be impossible to get in from mid afternoon. I should be able to catch up on forum news froma hospital computer tonight.

Well, it's not like you didn't have plenty of warning. You really ought to pay more attention to the weather.TonyT wrote:small hail in Amberley overnight, quite intense at one point. Sleet turned to snow around 9am and snowing hard now.

Thick snow continuing to bucket down in central Chch - starting to look at least as bad as August last year; August 1992 if it continues at this intensity for too much longer. However, I can't imagine it getting as bad as 92 for the area as a whole - then heavy snow fell for 3 or 4 days continuously at only slightly higher altitudes (200-300m), whereas this storm is only expected to last about 24 hours at the most.

More likely it's branches breaking off under the weight of snow and taking the lines with them. That's what happened here in early June 2002 when the power was out for a few hours.ricky wrote:wow that snow has tripped out so many lines! i guess it sticks to the insulators?
what kind of camera is that Steven? love the images...
Camera is a 2nd hand Powershot G2 connected using PSRemote software and a webcam app I've written to switch exposure mode, etc, based on time of day. I'll eventually replace the current weather camera with it and change it to upload a higher res image (it's a 4Mp camera).
Snow isn't so heavy now and the temp has risen slightly in a more W'ly wind.
