Keep us posted on those northern windspeeds. It's been so calm around here for so long I've forgotten what a windy day is like!

the SWer looks to be bad as well...
its the NWer that can be bad here (i.e 87 knot gusts you can get on the coastal hills here (800 feet above the Tasman) in a good one (the Waitekere ranges create a pressure wind you see )

Will watch the low with interest.

Upper air will be cold across NZ over the next few days, that means unstable conditions. Had a heavy squally shower in Epsom 10am but a bright day now.

will know closer to the time how strong the winds will be
might only be a normal gale and not a severe one...

no, its the NWer winds that are the worst here, being a pressure wind, that builds up here on the coast, almost like a mini lee trough but in reverse
also the southerlies are bad too, same sort of thing, a pressure wind running up the coastline (i.e the wind does not like to go over the land, and so instead pours down the coast line as a river of wind (would make a good thesis the whole thing)

i forgot i am playing a hockey game sunday morning (Finals)
so it will have to be after 1pm to meet up

The SW is by far the worst here(It is always at Gale Force).Like a wind tunnel effect it never letsup and often has Rain.The SSW is windy as well but lot less Rain and often PC.

The NW is always light but on occassions can get good gusts when the tasman low is deep.
The NE can get strong and gusty but mainly happens when the rain starts and then dies away quickly after that.

Westerlies can suddenly go SW and rise to Gale Force with Rain then almost completely become light or moderate back to W or WNW

All other directions SE,N,ESE are usually weak

latest met service prognosis charts show a real dozie, a 976 low
could be a hum dinger, and a real good opputunity to experience some wild open west coast winds...

holy moly, we could get some damaging winds if its not too northerly (as the low passes to the south it will come more onshore (ifs its too northerly then it will be eastern northland/eastern auckland coromendal that will cop it bad, but what usualy happens is it will do a sudden blasting shift to the NNW here, where the wind will go from 20 kts to 65+ in a few minutes
already 37 knot (70kmh) winds here today, LOL

i was thinking of putting my (spare) Davis WMII weather station on top of the car, and make it a storm chase vehicle.....so can sit in comfort....(7 seater) !!
