Lashing heavy rain with some hail has eased (18mm/hr to midnight, 28mm in the 3 hours to midnight) and I also noticed we peaked at 20mm/hr early Wednesday morning! :D (Downtown)
Strong northwesterly has eased, 12c.

Low centred 700km W of Farewell Spit has really started swirling and deepening within the last hour..

115kph At Manukau Heads? Cool! Should rise to 80km/h today here hopefully, maybe more during possible thunderstorms...

Steven W, when you look at Helicity values, are you looking at modelled soundings and windgrams or what? :) Are there modelled specific values out there?

The new cricket season is here, and those outfields look mighty green and soft! :D
Cheers, rain has turned heavyish now.

After a brilliant day of hot sun yesterday, I woke up to grey skies with rain and wind, a temp of 9 degrees C on the wall of my house, and my kowhai tree laying on the road. And that rain is really cold too.. usually its quite warm, but not today.

Yes, cold this morning with heavy showers. Temp 11C. We are getting our August weather now!
Steven W, when you look at Helicity values, are you looking at modelled soundings and windgrams or what?
No, I just take them of the actual NZWP/NZPP soundings.

met service just released this warning
Squally showers
could produce severe gale gusts of 120 km/h in parts of Auckland from
later this morning through to late afternoon.
Winds of this strength have the potential to cause damage to trees,
powerlines, lift roofs and to make driving hazardous, especially for
tall sided vehicles.

but why today, why not yesterday, when it looked like we were going to get winds strong enough for a warning anyway?

my ligthtning detector is working well, now that i lenthended the aerial on it

recording strikes at the moment...looks very black out to my SW at the moment

Heavy rain in christchurch.
And strong cold (6C) southerlies too - nice morning to be indoors. Canterbury skifields (those that are still open) should be getting big dumps of snow.
