discovered this morning that where i was milking cows yesterday, a haybarn lost its roof not far from the cowshed....i thought it was getting a tad windy...the car sure was rocking, with the rain coing off in a big sheet of spray.....and before that the power was off and the poor power board was working on a pole nearby......the hayshed was pretty rusty though, and i am surprised it had not lost its roof before now
150kmh was the max gust recorded at tiri tiri
the winds were strongest in that north auckland area,.....i wonder why
considering the baro was only 985 at cook straight,....there must have been a
zone of tight packed isobard in this area....or maybe it was just a momentum thing/low struggling to cross central nz/wind all forced up this way/sort of thing

Dewpoint temp at Norfolk Island is 18C this morning. Maybe most of that moisture will pass to the north of NZ, though should get some of it over northern NZ tonight.
Just add that the satellite pic indicates an area of strong convection (thunderstorms) out to the NW of the NI within that area of very moist air.

Ok, we have the power back now - brown-out since lunchtime yesterday, not enough to run the fridge or pump, dinner last night was BBQ!
I took off down to Muriwai around 12pm yesterday - the wind was pretty strong.. driving directly into the wind I was making a couple of PSI boost just to maintain 80-90 kph!
The sea was huge - I think the swells would have been in the 4-5 meter size range. I've attached a picture I took of the island out off Muriwai - at times you could see spray come up over the top of the island when a large wave would hit the other side.
There is a stream that flows down the cliffs - not yesterday.
Had a hell squall come through about 1pm - I didn't get a measurement of the wind as I was sprinting for the car, but the 'normal' 30 knot wind felt like a gentle zepher in comparison.

i like that last photo
and a perpetual waterfall!
we get sand waterfalls here on this coast, no rock like that, just sandstone!
i bet some of the houses got a blasting, but most of the wind lifts over them, from memory when i was last there!
150kmh gust, thats 81 kts....65kts is hurricance force, but that refers to a 10 minute average, but you get the idea, LOL

Nothing dramatic here - today brilliantly clear. Some rain fell on each of the last 4 evenings but with the westerly shelter there was little wind by our standards, and the first half of each of those days was fine. Heard distant thunder last evening.Gary Roberts wrote:A perfect day in the MacKenzie. Life is good.

To add my 5 cents worth to this very big post, it did seem very windy here yesterday but not strong enough for MetService's Weather Warning Criteria.
Auckland obviously did get a good hammering from the SW winds, which would of pleased Michael for for once his postings would be of worth.
The low was very deep here and it was obvious that a good wind was instore for the north, instead of a normal flow flow delivering the usual bout of thunderstroms to that area.

Re: Cool, Wet and Windy Westerlies
Rainfall here so far for October: 108.6mm, topping all MetService-measured centres.
Tauranga not so far behind on 102mm.
And t's only the 9th!!

8" of snow fell on the Lindis Pass yesterday morning, almost stranding a police car and fire truck (not to mention a bunch of other vehicles too).Foggy Hamilton wrote:Rainfall here so far for October: 108.6mm, topping all MetService-measured centres.

Snow fell on other peaks and ranges, but nowhere near as much as on the Lindis. Very weird.

snow on the lindas pass
you guys were correct about the warm advection snow forecast
94mm for october so far,.,.average here is about 100mm
september had all its rain in the last 2 weeks, october might get most of its in the first 2 weeks, as yes there looks to be a slower moving ridge of high pressure coming now
(after having some very mobile weather systems over the weekend!!)
(did I not say seeing that westerly jet stream pouring into the tasman from over tasmania means gales to come?...write it down, its a good one

It was an extremely localized event. Only the Lindis Pass received a substantial quantity. Even the higher peaks nearby received less. Areas further away received very little (although I've been told Tekapo received an inch or two).Manukau heads observer wrote:snow on the lindas pass
