Low pressure system crossing North Island on Monday

Unread post by tich »

Now that the cool unstable westerlies are about to end (for the meantime at least) and that thread has grown to a massive (near record?) size, I thought I might start a new one, since a new low pressure system should move in from the Tasman following tomorrow's brief ridge.

I guess that the North Island will get the bulk of the rain from this new system, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a warm advection snowfall in inland South Island, or maybe even the central North Island, as the air over NZ might still be cold following today's wintry conditions. This may not happen, but the system is worth watching.

Yes we should see fresh westerlies turn light northerly tomorrow and developing rain again.
Then fresh gusty westerlies again on monday with possible thunder :D
Clearing sou'westers on Tuesday, and a period of showers on Thursday.

Christchurch should see around 12mm from it on Monday with cool easterlies.

Michael, we got 8" of snow on the Lindis Pass yesterday morning. If that happened in Auckland would you be happy or sad?

Woken by heavy rain incoming from the NW.
Tasman is very thundery at the moment.. even the WWLL trackers (Otago Uni/Brisbane) are picking it up which is rare!

Hamilton not the only place in the world with heavy rain...

Get this, Subtropical Depression 22 is bringing extremely heavy rain to the Bermuda... Charlotte Amalie, capital of the US virgin islands is set to record over 400mm in one day! I attatched a meteogram.

Continues to CRASH down :D

clearance of rain through here now
34mm at the west side of the peninsular, 26mm here
more than expected when initialy this low/front was heading our way!

temperature went from 10oC at 6pmish to 17oc at 6amish!!!!

sun should come out this morning, but maybe an active line of cb's to come through this afternoon with a second front that might intensify as it gets closer?

Yes Brian, day looks like it will brighten up, temperature should perk up to about 20C before cooler air starts coming in later with a few showers breaking out and the chance of thunder.

32mm from midnight here.
New total for Oct so far: 139mm
Partly cloudy, fresh NW and 18c. should stay dry until the evening.

Rain band still brushing Hick's Bay, should continue to, may even rech Whakatane soon.

edit: We even had thunderstorms early this morning according to the MetService! ;)
Very humid air is spreading southwards over the North Island ahead of a cold front and a few thunderstorms were triggered in Waikato along the temperaturre and moisture boundary early this morning.

Well an active band of showers with isolated thunder is just crossing Northland and auckland..
I was woken by a friend living beside eden Park who was hit by a severe squall around 1am, at the time he said he thought it was a tornado it was so loud and strong.. said his recycling bins had been blown away lol..
Well thats interesting because there was almost no wind/rain recorded here at all a couple of kms away but the rain radar did show very isolated fast moving and intense precipitation at that time..

Yep looks like it all went by to the south and north of here.. did see those strikes near you on the tracker..

Well I went out to survey the damage.. quite amazing!
I traced the path as a straight line from pt chev across western springs park/motat- small branches shredded and spred quite a distance, trees up to about 20cm partially uprooted, road signs snapped off and blown away..
Then across the upslopes of Kingsland saw tho houses with roofs liften/blown off, wheelie bins were upturned and scattered across the roads, what a mess!
more small trees broken/uprooted.. across eden park and eventually stopped following the damage at my eden rd just sth of the village..
The width was about 100m down to around 20m in places.. wheelie bins were very telling. all of a sudden on either side they were still standing, in fact there were cardboard boxes still neatly stacked so the wind was extremely localised, the path was marked by a track of shredded leaves/small branches.. no really major damage seen. Looks like the wind was pretty much all in the direction of the path..
no change in the windspeed here less than 1km away but there was a sudden shift from the North to NW at that time..
Quire surreal really :)

good stuff ricky!
so a downburst then if all in 1 direction?
windspeeds must have been 80 kts to do that damage, as a quick short acting blast, I would say

Thanks for that report Ricky. I slept through any weather this morning and that wind damage would be less than 2km from here.

The midnight sounding at NZWP shows unstable air. Balloon was released at 11pm. Winds were NW with no sign of wind shear.

I have done a quick survey of the damage and there is no question that this was tornado. What a pity it came through at night. It looks to have formed an a prefrontal cb, so would have been quite visual during the day I think. Looks to have been an F0 with possible F1 bursts.

The corrugated iron swimming pool fence at Pasedena Intermediate School was completely demolished and thrown in all directions including smashing a hole in the roof of the pool house. I met the school caretaker there and he said he thought it was vandals and had called the police! I asked 'how can vandals do this'!
