there must have been better cold air above/more instability from waiuku/pukekohe south yesterday, better than areas further north...i.e just over the waikato only...as that puke/waiuku CB did not get any heating of the surface to trigger it off, as there was cloud and rain there early morning and neer did clear properly from that...but it was the influx from areas further north where the sun was shining, getting uplift from the port waikato hills and the huna ranges, etc....but the same thing was happenign on the waitkekeres, but it never fired up to such an extent, so the instability must be and an be quite defined (the upper level winds were quite light (my all day web cam movie showed that )

Yes, there was something about the conditions over Puke as thats were the best convection occured. That was a good looking storm for a while.

Those cb's over northern Waikato in the early evening turned thundery, but too late in the day to come to much.

As for today, doesn't look as interesting. Some t/cu will bubble up with isolated afternoon showers from low topped cb.

Looked to be numerous Cb over Waikato yesterday afternoon but the Cb on the Northern fringe picked up more heat as skies in the Ak area cleared.

nice convection going off to my east north and south i hope that the seabreeze doesn't blow it away when it arrives already hotter that what it was yesterday yesterday max was 21C 23c already today and it is only 11 45am bases are turning very dark will be interesting to see what happens all this going on despite the high cloud that is around

Looks to be a sea breeze convergence zone with showers through the west. As I indicated earlier, low topped cb's. Midday sounding indicates tops to 3500m possible.

I have put a report up the tornado this week in Auckland. Unfortunately the resolution of the photos look too low. Will have to change that when I get a chance.

yer stupid high cloud grr came over and slowed things down grr however a convergence zone formed but the stupid seabreeze pushed it east grr again better joy 2morow

i reckon that you got a good chance of some action down there in th esouth island just for a change today up here we ended up having 2 hours if light rain from yesterdays heating between 9pm and 11pm lastnight the last of the high cloud is moving away now yay and the fog is clearing so here we go hopefully the last 5 nights the sandflys have been terrible with the icreased humdity a fiar bit of shower activity around on the 7am radar already it will be interesting to see what happends 2day

Winds are light so afternoon sea breeze convergence looks likely somewhere.
More sunshine today and with the moisture still in the air there should be some local afternoon showers about.

alot of convection going off atm with some towering cu light winds and sticky noticed the clouds were moving in a northerly direction when i woke up not they are heading more in a westerly direction covergence very likely looks like it is fairly unstable up here heavy showers on the cards maby a few storms aswell looking much better than yesterday and i doubt wether there would be a repeat of yesterday when the high cloud rolled in looks like that has gone only a few thin wisps passing by a bit of low cloud aswell but that is buring off

update heavy shower to my NW and a very dark cloud right overhead waiting to see what it is going to do

i dont have a camera atm saving up for a really good one so that would be why you have not seem any pics to back up what i am saying... blah seabreeze done it again grr blew the convection away so a boring day here anyone getting any action

Absoulutly no convection out there at all although there was some small Cumulus around BP earlier its just fine here NE nothing but Mares tails and blue sky around now.
Bugger no Thunder now for another long wait till next storm potential day .

NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER YOU BETTER BE STORMY MONTHS .

Fine and dry here, some short lived Cu towers around today mostly out east.
Can see a weak Cb has formed SE of here, perhaps Kaimai Ranges.

Yes Jase, I saw some pileus development of top of those weak Cu forms from West Melton, just before the return to the Nor-easterly.
After the Ne took hold, the Cu all dissipated, so that buggered my thunderstorm theory for today.
Mind you the barometer had climbed overnight.
Any way, I don't want to see damaging hailstorms over Canterbury especially this time of year, with our trees, the young fruit trees coming on

Yes, that is pileus spwill. Pileus forms when a cumulus tower hits the stable layer, and moist air rises over the cumulus top. So pileus is something like an oregraphic cloud and also a sign of a stable layer.

A lack of moisture across NZ today, meant thunderstorms could not develop.

Thursday/Friday look possible thunderdays in the north.

that cb way off the SE, maybe kaimas way, is getting to be a good height now
