baro is slowly dropping up this way now..
sky has a look of rain about it....
sat image does show lots of heavy rain band clouds to move down,,,once this new system starts to move south and se...so the potential for rain is there, especialy as it squees up against the high and increases the wind gradient and prounences any orographic effects, etc
update, yes indeed there is rain moving south onto the far north now
did anyone notice the huge amount of cloud over eastern OZ yesterday?

And this pic looking south towards Otaki...
Interesting photo - certainly does look like the beginnings of a funnel cloud. (though in the thumbnail, it looks more like an approaching giant wave/tsunami  )

Some outbreaks of rain today, 18c and breezy easterlies.

Winds turning southeast tonight bringing the heaviest rain of the system.. in particular to North Auckland/Coromandel/Bay of Plenty ;)
Though less rain is being forecast now for Gisborne to Hawke's Bay

Rain set in around 2pm in Auckland.

What are the chances of thunder inland Canty today
I think a low chance for inland south Canterbury and Central Otago. Would need some good surface heating though. Elsewhere in NZ not very likely with upper air too warm relative to surface dewpoints.

Yes, some interesting stuff but the SW is hanging in there.
On the way home home from work, some Cu was developing into a back to the NE situ. ..but the Sw hang in there...interesting.

but anyway as far as thunder goes, I think we're buggered for the spring, sadly...
...looks like it is happening on the east coast of Australia, lucky b

Some nice forms out there today indeed off an on but once again soe nice CU forms goin up about now must be the cooling down that fires them off around this time of the year. :? .
CU to my NE as John mentioned about and also some now popping up along plains below is what i got today but the big CU this morning was the best from today.
Drizzle here tomorrow :? I dont think so id say more like few light afternoon showers i surpose id consider that as drizzle in the NZTS terms  .
Cheers

Nothing in Chch so far, just cloudy with small blue paches here and there. But 7am radar showed a significant shower near Amberley, so MetService's forecast for a few showers isn't wrong for Cantebrury.

this low has not deepened as fast as thought,,,so far...still might...off east cape.....
problem might be that there are too many centers, with that one off the NE keep on stealing the blankets....

We should still see rain from the low-topped cloud in the Tasman today, S/SE winds now starting to pick up on the East Coast with associated heavy rain and swells.

Persistent rain has turned heavy for a time here, still a rare gusty southerly blowing.

Over 65mm so far today in Gisborne and Whakatane, +45mm Rotorua, and over 55mm for Napier! :P

So 100mm and counting in Napier/Hastings, beats my 70mm! :D

140mm so far in sunny Gisborne!
Persistent all-day rain here, but not to those measurements!

From NZPA...
Weather chaos across North Island
21 October 2005

Bad weather is causing havoc across the North Island with heavy rain in Hawkes Bay and East Cape, and slips on major highways.

Gisborne civil defence officer Richard Steele said pupils at Tolaga Bay Area School, about 55km northeast of Gisborne, had been sent home early today because of the heavy rainfall.

Three families had also been evacuated north of Tolaga Bay as a precaution in case river waters rose after dark, he said.

Apart from that, one other person had chosen to evacuate.

The MetService was forecasting the rain to continue at least until midnight which could cause evacuations inland from Gisborne, possibly affecting 20 to 30 homes.

SH2 north to Opotiki had been closed because of an overflowing river.

"We don't know when it's going to clear but I wouldn't see any movement . . . until tomorrow morning," Mr Steele said.

A few roads to communities in the district had also been lost.

"The weather's pretty shocking here, so you'd only really want to travel if you have to, and that would be our advice."

Gisborne police this evening reported SH2 was closed due to surface flooding at the Waipaoa River crossing, about 10km from of Gisborne, and Nuhaka, about 70km southwest of Gisborne.

SH35 was closed between Tatapouri, about 14km east of Gisborne, and Tokomaru Bay, about 93km northeast of Gisborne.

MetService duty forecaster Jasmine Kennedy said areas in northern Hawke's Bay had received more than 100mm of rain in the 24 hours to 5pm, while Gisborne itself had received about 80mm in the same period.

A further 50mm to 70mm more was expected in parts of the Gisborne and Hawke's Bay regions between 5pm and about 3am tomorrow.

The low causing the bad weather was north of the Hicks Bay area of the East Cape about 5pm and was to track eastward taking the rain band with it.

The rain and strong winds would gradually ease tomorrow and after that most parts of the country should have "a fabulous Labour Weekend", Ms Kennedy said.

In Auckland a woman and her daughter fled from their house in Laingholm after a bank collapsed and damaged the house.

No one was hurt and full details were not available but a Fire Service spokesman said the bank slipped into the house.

Police said there were large cracks around the house.

Auckland traffic was moving about normal for a Friday evening.

Traffic had been delayed earlier in the afternoon, with crashes on the southern motorway and possibly many people trying to get away early for the long weekend.

Meanwhile police were asking motorists heading north out of Wellington this evening to be patient.

Traffic was heavy on SH1 between Pukerua Bay and McKays Crossing, and through Paraparaumu and Waikanae, police central communications said.

Those travelling by sea were also affected, with bad weather disrupting Cook Strait ferry services.

Interisland Line spokesman Martin Weekes, said the company's ferries had been running about an hour behind because of high winds.

"The Kaitaki will pick that up overnight," said Mr Weekes, the company's passenger services general manager.

It would be back on schedule in the morning, although the Arahura would probably still be a little behind.

He said the Kaitaki had been berthed tonight using a tug, but that usually happened in a southerly just as a precautionary measure.

"The ships are more than able to deal with this kind of weather."

Further weather warnings have been given for gale force winds on the north and west coasts of the North Island.

The NE/warmer side of a low never gets to the constant intensity of the SW here.Tonight it sounds like a freight train in notch 8 going down grade :o
