another big one went up quickly, must be east of huntly?
Just had a call from spwill, he says that cb was near turn off to Coromandal on SH2. He is in that vicinity and observed lightning.

Looking southeast from here I can see a freash cb building up down that way currently. Looks like my ts forecasting came up a bit short today.

It is fascinating watching the boilers. When i lived in Waikato it was always a good spot for watching and it seems to still be delivering.

When is the next period of boiler clouds going to happen?
Wonder if there will be any over chch one day so i can play with my camera thing.

Tomorrow might not be too bad for Thunder here late SW change afternoon/evening i did note Brendon sayig showers some heavy for CHCH forecast and MS have low risk out so here's hoping.
I still keep my wonder eyes on Saturday too  :D .
464th Post I dont think ill make it to 500 by November 17th unless there's some action weather and lots of thunderstorms to report.
Whats on that day you may ask is the day I sighned up the forum last year.
All has died down so no storms here tonight but still some great thunderstorms around Central NI good stuff.
Check out some of the pics from weatherzone too after last weeks storms and last day or two as well some really close lightning  and massive CB clouds amazing stuff really.
Cheers
JASON.

No. The only rumbles to be heard is from my guts after a Guiness or 2.
In the evening a few fireworks may cause a few rumbles.
As for hail, I thinks we may be in for a few dumps, wrecking glasshouse, whatever, but when ??? I don't know? There is an abundance of upper level cold air due, but when?

Another pic from the foothills, weak Cb around 6:30pm. It colapsed shortly after leaving a detached anvil.

Lied in the park for approx 4 hours watching Cb's develop, skew, light off and we even had light showers from no cloud above!

First stages of Southwestern development, 4.50pm
Image

Here is that Southwestern Cb you took a pic of GraemeWi..
Wind tore the tops of that one way across over to the Bay of Plenty!( By 6pm) 5.10pm
Image

Cb's bubbling up in the East, 6.00pm
Image

Northeast. Two anvils meet. Cb on the left must be the same cell spwill was near.
Image

East, 7.00pm
Image

Cb moving northwards, Northeast now. 7.28pm
Sunset effecting tops, pileus capping up there.
Image

7.35pm
Image

Sc killed a VERY good photographic opportunity!!

Southeast, 8.00pm
Lots of lighting observed from this :P
Image

Currently foggy, 12c and calm.

Forecast for Melbourne: Fine, few clouds. Light northerlies. Hot, 33c 8)

Good collection of photos there.

Must have been some convergence going on over North Waikato there which I did not factor in to my ts forecasting yesterday. Maybe a Breeze coming down off the Firth of Thames running into the SW'ester.

Well done to those who made the effort to photograph these cb's.
I am waiting for the perfect thunderstorm day before I give up an afternoons works to chase them. :)

I suspect the sunny weather is about to end for Auckland as an inversion layer combined with an onshore wind means stratocumulus is on the way. Sunny here at the moment though with 15C to start the day.

Quite a bit of action was brought up yesterday also down Taumarunui way, west past Raglan and North Waikato as you've said.
NZstorm wrote:Stands out clearly from here in Auckland. Matamata would be a good spot to see this buildup.
Matamata is the stormiest place in this circumstance, always under the Cb's when there's orographic thunderstorms across the Kaimais 8)

Waikato, Taranaki and Hawke's Bay proved to be the big winners in yesterday's thunderstorms :D , Bay of Plenty to Gisborne lost out where the risks seemed to be higher

Yes Brian, that southwester is a killer for convection in the west and north as it lowers the surface temps and removes the CAPE.

Yesterdays thunderstorm action was low CAPE, most of it fairly weak.

Hopefully we get some good thundery weather this summer where the dewpoints/CAPE are high. We didn't get any of that last summer, so due for it this year.

I thought the Waikato summer Jan - March was pretty convective and thundery, warm

But yes, bring back the Tstorms like late Nov - early dec '03! :D
It felt like living in Cairns for about 4 days in a row with those high dewpoints and everything that comes with it! \:D/

Waikato is by far the best place in NZ to observe Thunderstorms.

Took this photo last night on the way home.

I disagree, Canterbury plains is the best, becuse og the nature of the land and that its the closest we have to the plains of the midwest..
