It's 22C here with thick high cloud. Funniest thing is that everyone is saying how "muggy" it is. Losers
Humidity... 32%
Dew Point... 3.7C

Then I could just say Hamilton got to 28c?squid wrote:i go by what i record so there any wasy recorded 27c 2day a very warm day
Yeah right.
I'd believe your bloated temperatures if you did happen to live in a localised basin.. but I doubt it being near the western coast close to Dargaville.. right?
What you should do is take off about 2-3c from that figure and then report it...
otherwise everyone would be doing that and the globe will really melt!!
This has been said before here on the forum..
"Forecasting the weather is hard, reporting it isn't!"

The Mayor of Oamaru went on record in the local media as being confident that their new $15,000 weather station shall "prove" that Oamaru has better weather than has been previously reported to-date, and a flood of tourism dollars shall result.RWood wrote:And we can all cheerfully continue the tradition of over-reporting temps - TVNZ has various city mayors who have taken a lot of trouble to misrepresent their favourite places.

No offense intended squid but inaccurate weather data is the bane of our existence. Well it's annoying, anyway. Down here I'm forever being bitched at by people who claim that my weather data are incorrect: either they're too low ("It was much hotter than that!") or too high ("It was much colder than that!")...I've yet to have my readings queried by anybody who has properly sited and calibrated weather instruments. It's always some guy with a thermometer hanging on a brick wall exposed to the sun, or reflected/reradiated heat.squid wrote:doubt all you want we will just have to agree to disagree on this one i mean i have bene living here all my life anyways warm nihgt last night and the Nw is back charming
On top of that are the people - RWood's mayors, for instance - who believe they have a vested financial interest in boosting the sunshine and temperature figures for their area. Local politicians and business people always seem to think that if they can bump those numbers up, a huge tourism windfall will be the result, and they'll all become even richer.
I'm not saying that your data are wrong...it's just that we've all been down this road way too many times.

They probably saw how rich the rapaciously greedy developer scum were getting (and have become) from utterly destroying Queenstown, Wanaka, Twizel and Lake Tekapo, so decided they wanted a piece of that too.spwill wrote:All the new Hotel towers might spoil the place.
I guess the environment and natural beauty can be safely disregarded when there's money to be made.

Delving back into some history - given the possibility of a La Nina maturing - Jan 1956 was exceptionally warm, and for Central Otago and some of Canterbury it's still the warmest month on record. The most notable part of the month was 10th-21st (BTW this was all during a La Nina event of quite long duration). Courtesy of Jolyon Manning of Bridge Hill, Alexandra, these were the official daily max. readings in Alex. at the time (sorry, haven't bothered to convert to deg C!)
Day Max(F)
10 92.8
11 92.0
12 91.8
13 92.2
14 86.9
15 89.0
16 92.3
17 75.2
18 83.0
19 89.0
20 97.3
21 99.0
Mean daily max for the month was 83.5F (28.6C). Ashburton had 101.2
on 19th but a lower avg. daily max for the month. Cromwell's numbers were similar to those of Alex.
Things weren't so great for holidaymakers in the north (though very warm).

The hotest day on NZ record i dont believe has been beaten yet that was when Rangiora here in North Canterbury reached 42C during a NWer.
I believe it followed off from a heatwave in Australia where the air moved over Canterbury I bet there was some heavy falls of rain and thunderstorms on west coast on that day does any one have any totals?
Cheers
JASON.

42.4° - Rangiora & Jordan - 7 February 1973NZstorm wrote:Jason, I believe it was a bit warmer than that, 42.5C maybe. We have discussed that day on this forum before, one interesting point made was that the thermometer has never hit the 40'sC in NZ since.

Also people are forever telling me it was 40°+...their bones or their old thermometers said so. End of story.

and as well as Rangiora the same temperature was recorded on the same day in the Botanic Gardens, Christchurch and at Jordan, in the Awatere Valley in Marlborough. Locals report strange phenomena such as birds stopping singing and even falling out of the sky with exhaustion, and chocolate melting out of the packets in the dairys and stores.
Afterthought: It must get to 42 deg or more fairly regularly in parts of Australia, how do they get on for chocolate supplies there?

Can remember a lot of airconditioning from my days living in OZ.
Drove through Death Valley in California, it's one of the hottest places on Earth. Temp was 45C, a local said we had arrived on a cool day.
