Looks like the action has started guys. About 8 degrees or so of cooling on the Invercargill midday sounding at 500mb. Lightning now in south Canterbury and in the area northeast of Wanaka.

A hail detection tool is indicating about 5mm hail in the south Canterbury cells.

Pea-sized hail falling over Omarama right now, and quite windy. Temperature dropped 7° in 10 minutes.

18.2° at 12:45 - 10.8° at 13:19...a total fall of 7.4° within 34 minutes.

At 1pm, bowed line of cells west of about Ashburton showing consistently sized 15mm hail in 3 locations and moving eastward.

Anybody have a report of hail in the area to confirm this?

All quiet on the Omarama front. It appears as if the worst is well over for us. Just an hour long interlude, but enjoyable nonetheless, although we could certainly use a lot more rain. I've not seen the lake levels this low in a long time.

Cant say we noticed any Hail. Headed down south to Dunsandel then inland where we set up, watched Gust front go over with gusts up too 59kmph. Observed cg lightning strikes there. Then followed the gust front/Cb to Lincloin were we observed cg and cc lightning. With moderate heavy rain, minor surface flooding in places.

Yes nice thunderstorm moving from the west to east just south of ChCh about 2:30pm.
Sat and watched it's development from our new place at West Melton.
Unfortunately could not observe it from there as my wife needed the car to go horsey-ing. She said that I could stay there if I wanted to but as there is no shelter there I thought I would go home.
Gust front came through here about 2:50pm
Saw a couple of flashes.

Weather starting to fire up again, now :)

Have you visited the West Melton observatory yet? :)

Looks like she's all done down here now, and a good thing, since Omarama station are having their annual Guy Fawlkes bash, with fireworks, a bonfire and free BBQ! I thought that was a goner earlier when it was blowing and hailing, but the weather's turned out lovely now. Woohoo!

And squid, feel free to send us some rain. But not tonight. Cheers! :D

Travelling from Chch to the peninsula midafternoon, I saw the squall line from Lake Ellesmere about 2.30 - 2.45pm - must've been somewhere about Ashburton, maybe Rakaia. (1 small lightning strike that I saw). But it must've been moving quickly, as when I got to just over Hilltop it arrived :o , with briefly gale-force gusts, and then rain, hail (slushy and no more than about pea-sized), and thunder & lightning. That was the thunderstorm, and since then it's been showery at times out near Akaroa, but no more thunder or hail.

Our new place WILL be the West Melton Observatory :)
.... well for thunderstorm development observations that is, once adequate shelter is provided. 8)
Don't forget we are starting from scratch there :)
Came onto rain here (Somerfield) from just after 6pm then a bit of a shower later. First bit of rain here. No more thunder etc. Me thinks it's getting a bit boring now.

A nice thunderstorm to start the season. No hail seen however there was some moderately heavy rain as Steve has indicated.

Here's some pics (clickable):

Gust front that produced 59kmh gusts, quite sustained at times. Also Cg and Cc lightning was observable behind the gust front.

Image

This is part of the gust front, it sort of broke off and looked like it made a nice pic?

Image

Third is the storm as it drifted out to sea on the south side of Bank's Peninsula, we were south of Tai Tapu at this point. Some nice Cg and Cc lightning seen here.

Image

I've had a look through the video footage and managed to capture quite a few nice day time Cg and Cc lightning bolts. Will hopefully put a few of those up tomorrow. Hopefully another lot of storms tomorrow to!

Cheers

Interesting reports guys. Good pics too, especially of the gust front.

Even though you only observed very small hail in a couple of cases, ofcourse it doesn't mean that larger hail didn't occur somewhere. The detection routine we have at work usually indicates the hail occupying a rather small fraction of the total echoe size.

Well, lets hope we get another shot at it tomorrow.

Cheers

Agreed Paul, we couldn't possibly cover everywhere so it's very possible some bigger hail did fall in areas.

Indeed hopefully some more storms tomorrow!

Cheers
