Unstable start to week

Unread post by NZstorm »

Might just start a new thread for todays weather.

Cold unstable air crossing the North Island today almost certainly means thunderstorms/hail developing inland as the day heats up.

There were a few low topped cb's off to the west and north-west as I drove into work today - quite nice looking as the rising sun caught the tops.

Cheers,

Sat pic shows nice looking Cb west of the NI this morn, suggests high risk of Thunder across central NI as that lot moves across the warmed land this afternoon.

I see strikes on the Tracker to our South.
Cb around Ak city are mostly small, do not get good surface heating around the city in these cloudy Westerly situations.

wow!
and i had remarked to someone this morning, when a good squall line went over here (which had a very marked line too it), that the conditions looked ripe for a tornado somewhere (so it looks like their was enough instability further down the country to get one!)
thats the 2nd time this year i said to someone conditions are ripe and then someone gets one!
just tried to phone me sister near whakatane...but no one home, to see if i could get a first hand news, LOL

Just had a heavy shower here with hail.

Todays midday NZWP sounding had an observed lifted index of -3.4 with the 500mb temp at -26.5C. Unseasonably cold.

Heavy rain just passed through Pongakawa BOP. Lightning to the south. The worst of it looks as though it is tracking from the west to the north of us - out over Maketu and the sea.
