Conditions are expected to destabilise again over central and southern New Zealand from Wednesday afternoon as temperatures in the upper atmosphere cool.
In the South Island, the most likely area for thunderstorms is about the south coast in the late afternoon and evening as a weak cold front moves through the area. This front should bring heavy squally showers, thunderstorms and some hail. It is possible one or two of these thunderstorms could also affect Fiordland and southern parts of Otago on Wednesday evening, but the risk is considered low.
In Canterbury, a southerly change should move through around the middle of the day. There a low risk of a few thunderstorms with this wind change, with the threat level being slightly higher in North Canterbury, however an expected northwesterly flow ahead of the front means there may not be sufficent low-level moisture to allow thunderstorms to develop.
In the North Island, a front will move across southern areas in the evening. It is likely this front will contain a few embedded thunderstorms, particularly about the ranges, along with a brief period of heavy rain.

End of week thread probably irrelevant now, as the outlook appears more settled, except in the far southwest. Tomorrow now looks like having the only significant chance of thunderstorms for NZ for the rest of the week.Tich look my origanl canterbury thunderstrom look out, it includes wednesday, no need new thread is there

spike_01 wrote:That wouldnt surprise me... There is a front on the way and it looks much like the last one...
There is also a small depression developing over Eastern Aussie...
No nothing from this,
As the statement from MetSerice said that the moisture level at low levels would be low because of the NW influence preceding the front..
Could? be a weak Gust front though like the other day
...that depression seems to be a 'Gone-burger"

I had light snow hitting my windshield at Twizel this morning, and there's plenty of fresh snow on the hills too. Around lunchtime in Omarama there was a prolonged hailstorm, but I missed that one.spike_01 wrote:Could well be...Jasestrm wrote:Looks like a storm is brewing just inland from Rakia in South Canty.

Skies darkening to west and southwest, with some spits in the last 20 minutes. I wouldn't be surprised if a thunderstorm is coming.Looks like a storm is brewing just inland from Rakia in South Canty.
4pm rain radar shows some heavy stuff and pink also some strikes around there on the tracker.
Snow is only forecast to about 1000m on the Southern Alps, Twizel is only about 500m? Southerly hasn't been really cold yet in Chch - about 12C now.I had light snow hitting my windshield at Twizel this morning, and there's plenty of fresh snow on the hills too. Most snow would have been at the 800m level I'd say, with some extremely light dustings below that. Twizel only copped a glancing blow, but enough to land on my windshield!tich wrote:Snow is only forecast to about 1000m on the Southern Alps, Twizel is only about 500m?
