Cloud now glaciating over the Port Hills.
Great line to the south not moving yet
That 'line' is clearly visible to the southwest. 1pm radar showed shower activity as close as about Rakaia - nothing near Chch yet, but shower cloud also visible to the northwest, though not looking heavy there.

I see Milford was 6C at 9am and 16C at 1pm.
Fohn wind must have got in there and no doubt sunny there now.

I was about to post that I have never heard anyone from Canterbury ever refer to the nor'wester as a land breeze, and then John goes and writes it!

Sorry, I was using it the same unmeteorological context as "frost in sheltered areas" :-w

....anyway, broad area of rain and wind now moving in from the south in a somewhat bright sky. southerly wind up a bit too making things cooler.
Few more sfericals crackling away :)
thunder here soon ??

And once again we have failed on no thunderstorms how boring  :-({|= .
A storm did go off inland Canterbury before but i believe all is over southerly is here now cooled down had some rain.
Wednesday looks like our next chance although iam not as confident on that happening now as I was yesterday.
I guess you gotta get something out of it and that was a few good pics i took.
Cheers
JASON.

YES. All over bar the shouting
All alerts cancelled.
Now just boring 8/8 grey Ns sky :(
Enjoy your day tomorrow North Islanders :x
Why do forcasters forecast thunder anyway? Why don't they just say rain or fine?? Is it really important for people to know if the sound of thunder is going to be heard today or tonight for example?? :-k
Really boring weather ahead for this week with this bloody useless anticyclone in the Tasman Sea hanging around not knowing what it is doing

I like your last photo there Jason, well done.

Yes no thunder in chch not really bothered, did get a nice bit of hail about 230pm, now heavy rain has set in.

Cant say I have ever heard of the trm 'land breeze', its a new term to use in canterbury when winds are blustering up too 50 kmph :?

A good chance for thunderstorms in Canterbury ruined by a Northwesterly wind. The clue that the day was gonna be a fizzer was the 0600NZDT Hokitika upper wind flight which from memory, had a very strong westerly off the surface, over 30kts at 2000ft.

Upper cold pool crossing the North Island this morning with a scattering of heavy showers/hail. Day time heating will trigger a thunderstorm or two over the Waikato and into the Bay of Plenty from mid morning. Afternoon should see clearing conditions from the west.
