Met Service convective outlook signals a mod risk of thunder for west of Waikato tomorrow. Low risk over AK.
If some of that moisture(higher dewpoints) the low will be dragging in from the subtropics today can be advected onto our region then afternoon thunder would be on the cards.

There are some strikes showing on the LF EM plot, though they appear to be a bit further south - unsure of the accuracy of the global detection system though! (but it does show strikes spot on one of the blobs currently in NSW)

rain radar shows a slow moving very heay narrow rain band over the waipu area
its weakened a bit now from what it was
squid, the low center must now have moved onto the dargiville area now, and you are back into the colder SE winds
still only 12.4oC here at noon , 1 week from the start of summer!!!
that sounds like alot of hail!
its only 12.2oC at brynderwyn at the moment too

A 15 centimetre dumping of hail and heavy rain is causing problems north of Auckland this morning.
Some people in the Rodney District - particularly in Warkworth and Wellsford - have had to evacuate their homes after flash flooding , and hail has hit parts of Kaiwaka and Mangawhai.
Drivers are being urged to take extra care.
Jarron Phillips from the Fire Service says it has been a busy morning. He says initial reports were that the flooding was only in Rodney but since then there have been reports from South Auckland. He says fire crews are coping .
Mr Phillips also says the storm is moving away from Auckland, but could hit other areas in the south.

A high here today of only 11.9 That was during an almost fine spell.tich wrote:Must be pretty cold and wet in the BOP -
Started raining here at 9:30 last night, not much here, but more in Te Puke and up in the hills where we were working at the time. At least we got an early night because of it - home at 11.
Very steady cold light rain here all morning then a slightly clear patch, but settled back into a typical easterly type event here again. Low winds, thick low cloud and persistent drizzle. The cold is not usual though.
I like your little banner Brian

Just got back from a drive with spwill to Northland. There was still patchy hail lying at Kaiwaka and Waipu Cove at 3.45pm! several hours after the hail event. Collected hail stones upto 3cm in size. The hail looked to have fallen in a narrow line from Kaiwaka to Waipu Cove on the coast. Looked to have been a big fall of smaller hail then a fall of bigger stones.
The Waipu Fire Brigade told us they a call out to a house where part of a roof had caved in with the weight of the hail. Waipu recieved 150mm rain and there were minor landslips and flooded streams around the area. Looked to have been a great Thunderstorm up there. I almost went storm chasing up that way at 9am this morning when I saw the satellite. A bit irritated I didn't.

Some quite large stones still lying this afternoon.
Some stones where up to 3cm but were probably larger at the time of the Storm.
Edit- thats a 10 cent piece next to the hail

TV1 didn't have pictures. Shud have watched TV3.
The affected area was turned white with the hail drifts. Some of the locals up there must have got out the digital cameras for such a hail fall.
I would like to score some of those photos.
The severe thunderstorm was formed by convergence along a boundary line between cooler drier air to the south and milder moist air to the north.
