Rain here wetting the washing probably mean a SW change as the high pushes over the low to the east
NZstorm wrote:Yes, some nice t/cu out to the NW. Current temp 18C, dp7C.
What a pity the air is so dry. 500mb temperature on the midday NZWP sounding is -28C!!!.

Jumped in the car for a quick drive - argh needs petrol - drove in other direction to the local BP - no 98 left - not my day!

From a local vantage point a very obvious narrow band of active shower cloud stretching from Auckland to the north-eastern horizon. Edit - a couple of strikes showing on the tracker in the area.

To the south there is a glaciated anvil - could be the one Brian can see. Towers also going up west - out to sea.

4pm radar shows a strong cell near Wellsford, and another near Whangarei. There is a large anvil filling the northern sky. Great to have summer here!

Thunderstorm with hail over the Vicinity of Kaiwaka at the moment (same area as yesterdays big storm). I've just got back from a drive up that way, got as far as Waiwera. Cb was just north of me but moving northward and so decided to give up the chase. :?

Early afternoon the wind direction veered from SSE to SSW and dewpoint lifted from 7C to 9C (airport readings). I think that extra little bit of moisture made the difference to the stability today.

Shot of the anvil that was off to the north - the 5pm satellite image shows this stretching around 70-80km end to end

In contrast, skies have cleared in Chch late this afternoon - on TV1 Weather, the minimum forecast for tonight in Chch is only 1C! (presuming the onshore flow doesn't return the cloud again)

Upper air has warmed over northern NZ making higher atmosphere stable. Any convective cloud today will be low topped.

0C at Christchurch airport this morning. Summer starts at the end of the week. :?

It's quite rare we get this lee-side high cloud, we're Canterbury and Gisborne plays Milford Sounds almost in this circumstance.
Humidities were well down yesterday.

The "southeast arch' - I've seen it on the SI West Coast in an east to southeast flow, when Canterbury was dull and drizzly, while the fohn wind coming off the Alps gave the Coast dry mild weather.

Sunny intervals and cloudy periods continuing in Chch - the few showers earlier forecast by MetService never eventuated (at least not in central Chch), and the forecast has since changed to fine weather for Canterbury.
