You wouldn't think Auckland was either, from certain other commentaries. However even after a rapid catchup by Wellington in Sept and Oct and to a lesser degree in November, Auckland will still be ahead in sunshine among the 5 main centres for YTD - it had a big surplus for the first half of the year.

doesnt latitude have a role to play with sunshine hours?
or maybe not?
i.e 6 months of darkness and 6 months of light at the south pole is the same as 12 hours of day and 12 hours or night at the equator
(if you can measure sunshine when the sun is just above the horizon)
?

Across NZ's range of latitudes the variations are not all that important. For a given place the "exposure" (availability of astronomical daylight reduced by obstacles - hills, buildings, foliage etc near a measurement site is a more important determinant). Most sites reporting data have a fairly good exposure - some exceptions are places like Queenstown, Mt Cook village and Franz Josef.
