7pm radar shows shower activity in South Canterbury - heading this way or not? Cloudy with brief rain at times this afternoon in Chch, but it has now cleared with only areas of cloud.

I believe this afternoon's weather may have been a warm front, rather than a cold front with southerly change, as it's now warmer (about 22C) than it has been so far today, and the wind is a light northerly.

2.6mm Out of todays off and on periods of rain some big drops of rain in last segment shower withn mamatus above then short moderate almost hevay burst of rain.
There would have been alot of moisture lying around of course considering that it rained down in Otago this morning that may have helped Fijita Phil help us out here could you see that CB?.
My next eye is mostly set on Tuesday what do others think Steve?.
Cheers
picture is of some small CU within the scrappy rain showers.
Jason.

and i'll post here...

never heard any thunder around 5pm (or maybe I did). Tonight I'm in a crib at Taieri Mouth, a beautiful spot and not that far from the Airport in a straight line. Seriously thought the sky looked like it needed a rumble. The way my luck is with storms, Dunedin City probably got a nice wee storm as this tracked North and of course I'm down south.

Btw... for you North Islanders... a crib is a bach ;)

It didn't - now it's a fine warm morning; could be a very warm day, if the northeaster doesn't pick up.

The coming week looks less stable than last week with troughs over the country. More thunder on the way.

Yes, tommorow could have something here and later on in the week.
I did have hopes on Tuesday but it is looking less likely now.
Yes there were thundery looking skies to the south later yesterday but no ooooomph to get this going, sadly. We need some warmth.
Better luck this week :)

Yes it has been warm - hardly a December record, but a 29C max is certainly a warm day here.

Could well be Isolated thunderstorms over the inland North and South Island in the next few days. Upper air doesn't look very cold but reasonable low level moisture may lead to a freak thunderstorm or two. :)

The possibility of thunder tomorrow looks as goods as the possibility of drizzle and cool boring weather after it :)
Very short lived as well if they do eventuate.
You get that in these type of situations
However I do have a 5 out for tomorrow :D

Great cloud over Dunedin today on the back of a 24C temp. Was at the beach but never had the camera with me. The best I can do is the web cam but it really looked better in person...

Looks to be a good buildup on that front out to the NW of Northland. High dewpoint air out that way.

Isolated Tstorms over inland Otago this afternoon by the looks. Quite moist low level air and warm afternoon temps should be the trigger.

Some light rain over night, and warm, I dropped down to just 16.2c, with high dewpoints :?

Maybe some embedded thunderstorms in the organised front due here early afternoon.

Storms have fired up now in the Tasman Sea, especially about western Northland.
Humid.. potential for some good tropical-style downpours in the west and east from Taranaki to Northland
A front is expected to move over the North Island bringing isolated thunderstorms north of a line from Mt Taranaki to Mt Ruapahu to Hicks Bay in the afternoon and evening. These are likely to cause brief heavy bursts of rain and hail up to about 10mm diameter especially from Northland to Bay of Plenty. In Canterbury and north Otago there is a moderate risk of isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and early evening with localised heavy rain, and larger hail 15 to 20mm diameter. The risk is lower for the Dunedin area and eastern Southland. On the West Coast from northern Fiordland to the ranges of northern Westland there will probably be a few thunderstorms, especially inland, but these should die away late evening.

Atlast some moisture in the air.
Dewpoint in Auckland is 16C, current temp 19C so rather humid. Light rain falling.

temp now 22C/dp18C. Afternoon surface heating could trigger freash convection on that front. Still quite cloudy though.

Yes, I have a very good view looking WEST/West South West and it would appear there is a tower building out there...My view is from Addington and about 1/2 hour ago we had a *BRIEF* spitting of hail (not very impressive, but hail nonetheless)... some of us got up and looked out the windows to see the wee stones bouncing around briefly and then quickly melting...then the Sun came out...very wierd weather.

Clap of thunder with a loud sferic at 4:10pm to the Ne of here, towards Sumner. :D
No lightning seen so it must of been within the cloud.
Few sparse heavy drops here but that was it (10mm splashes)
Lots of unstable cloud forms going up since about 3pm, especially when the wind went back to the NE from 3:40pm
Not over yet more sferic on radio :D \:D/
