I've heard of ribbon lightning?

Ball lightning dosen't have to be nessesarily connected with thunderstorms.
I have heard of ball lightning sightings/reports on fine sunny days

That one funnel you have on camera John, I very much doubt it is a funnel, becuse it's not rotating.

Incredible looking cb's in the eastern Tasman this morning. Shows what some moisture can do to the stability.

Too right some nice looking Cb's indeed!!

I see Chch airport reading 18 degree dewpoints, surely this can't be? Must be some type of lag or something? We have had some high dewpoints recently but that high?

Cheers

Must be an error Aaron or you Guys will be sweltering.
With a temp of 28C at Chch a dew point of 8C or less sounds more like it.

I dont think it was an error, it was very sticky and unpleasant in Chch earlier today. Here in Amberley we had dewpoints of 15-16 before the breeze got up.
EDIT: I checked back on the weather station at home and it recorded an 18 degree dewpoint at midday.

Now the clouds cleared you can see Cb tops way out to the west from here.

Cb's out west of here are about 100km away although they look closer. Sounding indicates tops to 12000m. What is triggering these? Must be some sort of convergence line.

No doubt it was an accurate reading. A lot of moisture around CH last day or two.

Just checked the Met Service 0000Z weather map, they have a warm front marked in that area.

Massive cb visable out to the west - low cloud is obscuring it a bit - I'll try and get a picture

Looks a like a bit of a line about to cross the west of the NI. Isolated thunderstorms possible south of Auckland with the line.

Looks like southland is having another good Thunderstorm. This time over the Catlins, and out to sea. Also Huge Cb off the West Coast.

Looks like a few strikes east of timaru, out to sea. Possibly something later in store for us??

I dunno about where you are Steve but from where iam looks like there's a CB from West to SW few strikes inland from Rakia and south as you said near Timaru. 8)
Some nice Mamatus forms this morning too.
Cheers
Jason.

It was a great show. Quite a distance out to sea but numerous flashes. I went down to the beach to watch it about 11pm. :D
