More thunderstorms over Southland this evening!!
They seem to be getting an interesting summer down there in the deep south.

More thunderstorms over Southland this evening!!

A hot day through western Southland, temps late 20's. Queenstown had it's hottest Dec day on record apparently.

Summer here today

. Will be back to spring like weather from tuesday.

Queenstown temp was 29.5C.

Could be some interesting weather over Northern NZ later tomorrow as dewpoints rise ahead of a cooler westerly change.

Very warm here again today... Caught 3 Kahawai and 1 Red Cod...

Looks to be the same sort of pattern for this week as there was last week... Esp on Wednesday is my guess...

I was hoping for a storm to help cool things down but any storms appear to be way over west and just going out to sea.

This early part of summer reminds me of the one we experienced 98/99 though I don't think there were so many thunderstorms then.

Not so hot in Chch today - southerly breeze keeping temperatures down to normal.

Bloody warm in West Melton when the pump shed arrived about 4:30pm.
Must get my Stevenson's screen erected there but I won't start official readings until we are established there.
Next March probably?

Hi,

I'm in Invecargill and I'm so looking forward to a bit of cooler weather so I can get some xmas preparation underway.

I don't know what it is about the sun down here but it's like it's coming through a magnifying glass - quite scary really. I spent the second week of November in Christchurch where it got to 30degrees but I hardly had a sweat up, was also out in sun for an hour and didn't burn - but here it can be 24degrees & feels so hot and I got burnt in 15 minutes. I can't understand Niwa's burn times being supposedly the longest down here.

Anyway it's a lovely night out but still so jolly warm inside.

This is a great site and look forward to checking in daily.

Hi Lyn ...and hope you don't flutterbye this weather forum

It's been a very interesting thunderstorm period in the bottom part of the South Island especially in the Southland area.
Are you on hand to any video or visual recording of any weather event?
The Storm near Winton seems to be quite interesting plus the reports of tornadoes around the Riverton area 2 weeks ago.
This particular area does not have storms of this on record so this weather phenonomen of recent makes weather events of this interesting.

I watched that Riverton storm on the Southland rain radar move down from the north but missed us completely. I only snapped a few pictures before we got hit the other night.

Good morning,

Mainly overcast & mild this morning.

They upgraded the radar last week so it was unavailable when our storm hit. The colours depicting the rainfall appear to be round the wrong way so that yellow now appears to be the lighter rain and the blue maybe the heavier rain.

Winds have tended northerly now along with a rise in dewpoint, so rain not far away. RR shows quite a large area of mod rain due for the upper NI.

looks like not too much more rain as this warm frontal band is moving fairly quickly through... but followed up by some showers and instability further out... doesnt seem to be much activity on the cold frontal line itself though metservice are expecting some with their lightning forecast.
7mm so far here in Grey Lynn.. 18C, DP 17C gusty NNW not quite as strong now

Reports of state highways in and out of Wellington with lots of surface flooding must have been some good heavy downpours last night.
Heavy rain here at times last night recieved 14mm from it.
Clearig up now hopefully to a fine and warm day ahead.

Only 3.6mm here Jason, Port Hills provide some rain shadow from the NE here.
Sunny now but extensive high cloud to the west with the wind shifting to a northerly. Metservice have reduced the max temp for Christchurch to 23 today from 27 forecasted yesterday. The 100km winds have also gone from the forecast today. They are not expecting the low to deepen as much. Have to wait and see what happens today.

Rain in the Mackenzie overnight. It began in the late evening at the northern end, spreading to heavy prolonged fall around Twizel, but was mostly depleted by the time it arrived in Omarama, with just intermittent light falls until the morning, when it petered out completely.

A very nice vortex it is! Centered just SW of Hokitika.. Central minimum pressure is 988mb.

Some heavy showers this morning, mostly fine now but further thundery heavy showers on the horizon
