Started a new thread.

Looks like most of the thunderstorms today will be in Otago, possibly Southland and south Canterbury. Also lower NI and Hawkes Bay.

Fine in Auckland, W10kts, 23C. No showers here today yet.

Yes Steven, some thunderstorm activity here this morning spreading off the ranges. Quite supprising in the NW flow. Usually they never make it that far east . Instability must be there.

Partial report from a friend who was with me during Invercargill's storm last week who is now in Queenstown with another storm.

Heavier rain he believes, his motel (Copthorne, right above the centre of town) has been struck by lightning, power is out, gondolas stopped running... and he has no camera

I'd be very worried if I were a viticulturist down there andy! ;)

Mostly fine here now, brisk westerlies and warm.

What was Hamilton Ap gusting to, Brian? I only see 28 knots from the metars..

Some rain earlier in the Mackenzie, but not heavy (or enough), and no thunderstorm activity.

We have had thunderstorms here in Ingill for a couple of hours - heavy rain & almost continuous thunder. There is 30ml in my rain gauge, which is gret for the potatoes but not the fishpond.

Forecasts were suggesting thunder before although I still think the air is too dry for any here so I don't expect much at the most I sit under a Low risk but if any thing happens as the afternoon goes on then ill reconsider.
Tomorrow however Iam sitting on a High risk for storms much greater cooler SW flow in Toe.
Can see some development further south more south Of Ashburton way so will have to see.
I see NI is starting to become active there hope you get something there Foggy. :D

Spwill has caught a small tornado coming through upper Hauraki Plains,

We've been caught up in a lot of C-G, and C-C from a previous cell, we're waiting for the next line of thunderstorms at present.

spwill should send those pics in tonight..

An excellent chase so far!! :D :D

Heading to Hamilton now

Had some rain just after my last post, pretty heavy for a few minutes, but no more thunder (and didn't see any lightning). Now just cloudy with high cloud.

Better chance tomorrow depending on the southerly.
I have a 4 for tomorrow but that could reduce quickly judging by cloud cover, timing and barometer rise :)

Not too bad so farr today considering the fact for thunder ingrediants  sounds like iam making a Xmas pie.
Fine with 20C just past half past nine and wind just swung very light NE whih will be great up agains't southerly when it comes 8) .
Iam sure many CHCH storm chasers and residents will remember what happend on this day last year A Thunderstorm swept CHCH about midday I think Steve had hail size of pebbles and Aaron got a flash of lightning above which set off a bang and car alarms.
Hope something simular is in repeat for today.
Cheers

Yes, warm sunshine and an unstable atmosphere. Wind has been southerly or southwesterly today, but latest obs from Jeff's station show a change to a NE wind. Storms are more likely inland, according to forecasts.

Tomorrow looks interesting, as latest MetService forecast has a period of rain in the east from Canterbury to Gisborne, with a few heavy falls possible and maybe more thunder. It seems Canterbury should get the wet stuff earlier, so it could clear up later.
