The southeastern North Island (Wairarapa, central and southern Hawkes Bay) looks like being on the receiving end of a heavy dousing tomorrow, while thunder and hail are predicted for the central and northern parts of the island. Looks suspiciously like a case of explosive cyclogenesis, and could possibly be a major rain event.
Early next week looks interesting too - a complex trough moving across the North Island , followed by a cold southeasterly outbreak. Some of the models even look as if they're suggesting snow to low levels in the east of the South Island, and later in the central North Island. It might not end up like that, but since weather patterns at present are so messy, anything could happen.

It now looks like the heavy rain will be further north than originally forecast, but the movement of lows is not always easy to predict. I'm not surprised that this system is also dumping heavy snow on the central high country and Desert Road. Only 0.3C at Waiouru at 6AM, so I imagine the snow level has dropped further than the 1000 metres originally forecast this morning - the 600 metres mentioned in the road snowfall warning is more likely. Look out for possible heavy snow on the Hawkes Bay high country as well, including the Napier-Taupo Highway.
Fine now in Chch, after overnight showers. (No thunder or hail I'm aware of) Just some scattered clouds remaining.
