Holiday Storms

Unread post by 03Stormchaser »

Thought I would create a new thread as the 20/12/2005 one was getting a little dated.

There is a southerly change today that is going to head up the SI with the possiblity of producing a few thunderstorms, esp in Otago and S Canterbury. A low risk for anywere higher than there.

Just wondering what others think?

It's mainly fine here now, with just a few puffy clouds and the ocassional breeze. The baro is steady too. But things could change! Maybe we'll get more rain. :)

I didn't bring a camera with me to work, but if they arrive while there's still enough daylight I may get some pics from home.

Despite the keen ENE , it's looks unlikely in comparison to yesterday's attempt which could of produced something if the Sw change was earlier? :)

Nice pictures there, Phil. I think this thing will move out to sea and it'll just continue to be fine here?

Is that another Speights gold medal sunrise for you down there Gary.

I see a developing Low to the East of NZ later in the week could make the weather at some of our traditional NewYears locations like Gisborne a little on the unpleasent side, Southerlies and rain.

Glorious day here with wonderful air clarity. High cloud marred part of yesterday afternoon, cleared away later but there was quite a bit of dust and haze apparent at sunset.

Nice stuff with the lightning there Phil, I hope to get over to the coast in the next week should storms look possible and get some lightning on film.

Yep! It was 5.5° at 05:56 and it's now 21.6° and climbing. My solar power system is very happy.

There is currently the ingredients for a thunderstorm. It is 26C with a northerly wind and there is a SW flow. Usually in this situation CB form over the hills and Nelson gets rain in the evening. (sometimes thundery)
Currently there is not a cloud in the sky, but I will be ready with camera if anything develops.

Aaron mentioned a lady rang saying she saw a what looked like a tornado in Nelson. I did see something rotating and moving towards the ground on Friday last week. It didn't last long. Other than that it must have been a dust devil.

Dropped to 5.3°C in Rotorua on Christmas morning  , 24.3c yesterday with mostly sunny skies.. though we started to see signs of that trough moving in with large Cu developing over the lake late evening and delivered some few spits even to the city.

Back in Hamilton now and lots of T/Cu about and the odd Cb to the south, 23c with a northerly, few spits of showers

After earlier post, conditions cleared. On visiting Ardmore, a good 12kt easterly blowing whilst back home on the edge of the Manukau a 12kt westerly. Significant buildup now with a light shower and a single peel of thunder.
