Stromy Start to New Year

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Looks like a stromy start to 2006 with "Dsb Side rod" Low Weather Pressure Systems moving east to the south of the country.
This should result with a cooler start to the year with a mainly (the majic word) = disabled \:D/ SW flow over the country.
Depending on timing, coolness of the upper atmos, ground heating, there should a few thundersrtoms around the country, hopefully here :)

Glad I'm not a camper. Camping in the wind is a nightmare.
Have we had an early January looking this disturbed before?
Going down to Dunedin on the 1st January as it so happens.

Not sure where you get the severe gales from Jason, wind speeds dont look strong at all for Canterbury for Sunday, stronger but not near gale on Monday.

Edit, latest modelling still shows lighter winds for Sunday, but could be gale during Monday.

I have a 4 possible 5 out for Monday this depending on NW interference.
Can't see any gales but I can see some cold strong SW winds for this time of year this coming week :-k
May I add to the equation, the lack of influencial North-westerness as well 8-[

We're heading to Central Otago for next week, Cromwell specifically. What sort of weather can we expect for that region? Thanks Mike

Wont be too bad there, very well sheltered from rain/showers in that part of Central Otago.

Something beautiful was created tonight in our skies our typical lit up arch sky. :D :D
I see Ashvegas  got up to 31C today yus 8) NW blowing here now with 18C outside been NE all day still as some would say calm before the aproaching storm that may disturb many campers who may not be so happi after this.
Some brief rain earlier this evening too with large drops.
Lets see what the last day of 2005 throws at us.
Cheers
Jason.

No storms likely for Canterbury, just looks fine and hot (34c) on Monday.

Storms possible up here though on monday, with windy conditions.

Some rain overnight, overcast at the moment with a warm westerly.

The storm is brewing In the Tasman 8) id watch out Campers especially with where ever you are you will either get gale winds or heavy rain.
Some NI exposed places and Otago,Southland winds could reach 130kmh of course tending mre SW for Otago late Monday.
For other areas it's 120kmh in exposed places as to wether they will eventuate is another thing but something tells me it's gonna be worth it this system. pLenty heavy rain too in western areas.
Just some breif rain here to go with the gales tomorrow so no storms but Wednesday is shaping up to be ok at this stage 8) .
Cheers
Jason
And as Jim Hickey used to say Batten Down the hatches because Mad Dog Nor West is on the way

LAPS has it modelled at 992 at 0Z today, dropping to 957 at 0Z tomorrow, then as you say Brian, down into the 940s on Tuesday. Thats a 35mb drop in 24 hours, well into bomb low territory (in fact about 150% bomb factor :) ) Lets hope Stewart Island is well bolted down...

Evening,

They are saying 120km northwesterlies turning to southwesterlies Monday night with gusts to 140kms And according to what they are saying for tonight 'gusty northeasterlies developing' - when for the last few hours there has been only a gentle breeze (3.2km ENE) with some light rain.

If they are right about this it makes up for the big windstorm they didn't see coming about the 1st December 1997 that caused quite a bit of damage in the city. I will go out shortly and make sure thinks are secure now just in case.

Cheers

Dunedin should get the most out of this storm (wind-wise with gale SW'ers developing late tomorrow morning),
I think it will just be another windy day for the south.

Exceptional winds however developing for the Chatham Islands, especially about Wednesday... ouch

Potentials for some very hot temperatures tomorrow in the east.

Cheers
