Yes! Was a great night/morning we have had. Great pic steve! Some of the best lightning I've ever seen was tonight.
Got a few pics and video to sort out but here's probably my best shot of the night. And finally I figure the best setting for white balance is the "daylight" setting for taking night time lightning shots. Still not the best colours I feel but the best setting indeed!
Yes I know, I'm a scungy sob putting c Aaron Wilkinson on it! lol.

Interesting reports from all you guys in and around the Canterbury area yesterday and last night. Some great shots too. Your reports really help to fill out the picture of what actually occurs on the ground. Useful to get those hail size reports too. Looks like up to about 15mm was seen on the ground (but ofcourse the largest that may have fallen may never be reported).
Good stuff.

Iam gonna look at my video recording today So ill let ya know how well it went and I will get some stills on here.
Ohh and awsome work storm chasers awsome photo's really shows what it was like for sure.

Good report there Steve
Just come back from Waimate. They reported a good thunderstorm there on Wednesday. I don't know if there was hail involved as well but they probably did, just like Timaru.
Anyway, I'm somewhat mistified about the afternoon Cb? I couldn't see anything from here looking south
I had the sferix radio on all afternoon and heard nothing ( Even flicking the light switch to make sure it was working). It was only until later in the evening when the 'rodent' as Jim Hickey would say, went through.
I don't know what a range a lightning discharge can cause a sferic. I know they are much better at night time.

It was an amazing display
Good picture of artistic looking lightning there Steven.
That's not a skinny tornado at the bottom of the photo? or is it just a lamp-post???

I was actually trying not to get the moon in the picture All my photos are slightly out of focus .... I think I moved the focus ring when adjusting zoom
Sorry, the skinny tornado is a power pole
As you said in another thread, a storm would have been close to West Melton. It passed about 7km (by timing the thunder) to the NW of here at about 2am.

That funnel cloud photo of Jasons' looks like a strand of hail.
I came across these photos of the Timaru storms from Geoff Cloake, a Timaru resident. I have similar photos in my collection. This guy must have been out chasing as well.

A picture here taken around 5pm on the 6th of very high based cuform with virga just north of Christchurch(looking south). The virga appearance is hail which is melting giving weak rain/hail showers at the surface. 15mm hail reported from Christchurch around this time. Atmosphere was dry as well as very cold/unstable. A bust day for me.

This cloud passed to the east of us an hour or so later, and was almost certainly the cloud Tich referred to in a posting at that time as "something dark is happening to the north of Chch" (or something similar).NZstorm wrote:A picture here taken around 5pm on the 6th of very high based cuform with virga just north of Christchurch(looking south).
