It would appear now the storm is moving/spreading up the coast!! ...at least, according to storm tracker..
Better to look at the sat pic to locate storms rather than the forum tracker.
Here's the 3pm sat pic, can see large Cb east off Timaru.

Nothing happening here - a few showers - no strong cold SW change yet. The wind been swinging between NW & SW with sunny patches. Warmed up a tad since my last post - I have a current reading of 12.2.

Either the thunderstorms & hail are still to come or they have overdone the forecast again  :)

Looks like the Timaru area has been the place to be in NZ for thunderstorms so far this year.

lol really?? Hamilton would exceed timaru easily on number of thunderstorm days. Although I would take a Canterbury storm over one in Hamilton anyday!! ;)

Judging by TV1 news report, looks like F1 tornado damage to a property near Waimate this afternoon. A house had its roof completely removed.

Saw some lightning to the SW between 5:30 and 6 with distant thunder. Seemed to fizzle out before it got here but just had a heavy shower of rain. Tracker showing something off to the east over Port Hills (?) and now sunny here.

Photo is looking south at 6pm.

What a load of donkeys ass that was just a 30kmh S wind change  typical once again.
Unless something happens tonight this has been a disgrace again.
Cheers
Jason.

From my roof in North New Brighton I saw 2 thunderstorms, one over Lyttelton/Halswell, and one over Sumner/Southshore. South Shore seemed the most dramatic, but now both seemed to have fizzled out. Did get some good video of some of the south shore lightning and photos of the clouds, will post later ;)

Southerly gusted to 54km/h here for a short time. Some big drops of rain and some hail, a bit of it pea size but most of it small. The cloud coming up from the south looked promising but it was all over here before it started.
Certainly cooled the air, 10.4C at 7pm but little wind.

7pm radar looked pink over outer BP, but I just spoke to my father, and he said there was a bit of thunder & lightning out there, but otherwise just solid (but not torrential) rain. Just some briefly heavy showers in central Chch an hour or 2 ago, maybe a little hail, but I didn't notice any thunder or lightning (though loud sferics on radio)

It was a wee while ago...

Tornado strikes in South Canterbury
8/03/2006 18:04:02

A tornado has left a trail of destruction after sweeping through a South Canterbury town this afternoon.

Police and the fire service were required to help secure properties and belongings in Waimate.

Deputy chief fire officer Roger Bell says they had to remove a couple of chimneys from an old wooden homestead that was in the twister's path.

He says it lifted the homestead's roof off, sucking up bricks and mortar.

Trees surrounding the property had their branches twisted and were uprooted on the ground.

He says the twister gradually died out as it headed back into the eye of the storm, then out to sea.
