Ok... What's an anvil?

[/quote]

The top of a thunderhead spreads out in the very upper atmoss and looks like an anvil which a blacksmith uses for making things like horse-shoes for example. :)

Cumulonimbus are also characterized by a flat, anvil-like top (the anvil dome), caused by straight line winds at the higher altitudes which shear off the top of the cloud, as well as by an inversion over the thunderstorm caused by rising temperatures above the tropopause. This anvil shape can precede the main cloud structure for many miles, causing anvil lightning.

Yes Anrew If there are thunderstorms along the southern alps in a gale NW wind flow you will quite often see them to the west which is when we sometimes get rain spillover after gales.
An anvil cloud today on the edge of that heavy thundery shower gone through just before reports now of thunder and lightning in Cheviot it's not surprising some really nice towering clouds out there atm and one silent clap in the distance before.
Sorry thats off topic but there was an anvil b4.
Cheers
Jason.

I did notice an absence of Cb photo's on the forum from that day so the Cb tops were obviosly obscured.
I saved a photo off Jeffs excellent web cam which shows some Cb anvil over BP late afternoon but it is obscured by Cu and strato Cu.

Of course there was anvils :D

Remember the second line that came through? It put out an anvil....The first line with the gustnado though we didn't see any anvils.

There might have been other anvils from the Waimate storms etc during the day however I was inside working at the time.

Too right, awsome report there and good on ya for getting those pics NZstorm...great job!!

Cheers

Thanks for the comments on the report. And Jason, thanks for emailing that link. I sent you a reply but it didn't go thru to your email address for some reason.
