First real ice on the windshield this Autumn/Winter.

Unread post by Gary Roberts »

We had some thick stuff during the brief cold spell a month or two back but this morning's was a scraper job. The dewpoint and temp have been on top of each other all night.

Might get like that in Chch by tomorrow morning - already down to 4C with clear skies and light winds.

Yep...down to 1.1° and falling now, dogging that dewpoint again. Looks like we'll need the hot water and scrapers again.

How large an area would have been hoar-frosted?

Just the small area at Buscot corner, which is regarded by many here to be the coldest place in the MacKenzie.

Not quite in the city (down to 2C at Hillmorton), but could easily have been a white frost in rural areas away from the sea. Northeasterly cloud soon moved in this morning.

Just the small area at Buscot corner, which is regarded by many here to be the coldest place in the MacKenzie. The overnight low was -0.8° at 07:57 this morning.

My geography is rusty - is that in a local hollow of some kind, or just shaded by hills?

It's near the Omarama cemetery if that means anything to you. When you leave Omarama heading north, you cross the bridge, then pass through the cutting. After that is a sweeping corner. Around that there is the spot I'm referring to. It's mostly open to the WNW, but sheltered from most other directions.

Thats cool Squid,

Our overnight lows are 21-24 still, maximums lately have only been 27-28 due to persistent cloud cover.

Some very dense fog this morning too, particularly near Lake Ruataniwha and the Ohau canal road.

Yeah and this Aucklander had to de-ice the car this morning before I set out for Wanaka. I've never had to that in Auckland before ;)

Stunning day here in central Otago. I really do like this place!

Me too.

Call in for a coffee if you travel via Omarama.

The payoff for de-icing is normally a gorgeous day. Not pretty if the cloud rolls in before the frost thaws properly though.;)

Me too also aussi - but watch for places sometimes plagued by freezing fog - Alex. being one of them. Driving from the south, the fog if present would always start at Gorge Creek, north of Roxburgh.
